Chapter 1 - The Sparring Floor

The red martial arts training mat absorbed the heavy thud of Rheinhardt’s boots as he rolled onto his back, gasping for breath. The grey brick walls of the combatives hall seemed to close in around him under the harsh fluorescent lights. He spat a drop of metallic blood onto the foam, his ribs aching from Maya’s devastating roundhouse kick. His pride stung far worse than his bruised jaw.

Maya stood over him, her tied-up brown hair slightly untethered, chest rising and falling in measured, rhythmic breaths. Her face remained a mask of cool, unsettling composure. She did not offer him a hand up.

"You got sloppy, Thomas," Maya said, her voice dropping low so only he could hear. "Overconfidence is going to get you killed out there. That smile of yours is a mask, and everyone in this command can see right through it."

Thomas slowly pushed himself up, wiping a streak of sweat from the small red cut on his forehead. The cut was fresh, a souvenir from a tactical exercise gone wrong three days ago—or so he had told the company. He forced a strained, defensive smirk back onto his face, refusing to let her see him crack.

"My smile keeps morale high, Miller," Thomas retorted, his voice sharp and laced with defensive venom. "Not all of us enjoy marching around looking like we’re attending a military funeral. Some of us actually remember how to have fun before deployment."

"Fun doesn't stop bullets, Thomas," Maya snapped back, stepping closer, her dark eyes narrowing with intense scrutiny. "And your little act doesn't fool me. I saw the logistics manifest from Sector Four. I know why you requested this specific transfer, and it has nothing to do with training new recruits."

Thomas froze, the smirk instantly vanishing from his lips. The sudden shift in his expression was not lost on the veteran instructor standing nearby, who blew a sharp blast from his yellow whistle to cut off the escalating confrontation.

"Keep it controlled!" the instructor barked, stepping between them with his service medal glinting on his chest. "Save the personal blood feuds for the actual combat zone, soldiers. Dismissed."

Maya turned sharply on her heel and walked toward the exit without another word, leaving Thomas standing alone on the red mat. As she pushed open the heavy steel door to the hallway, a civilian in a sharp, non-regulation suit slipped out from the shadows of the corridor, handing her a sealed manila envelope marked with a top-secret classification stamp before disappearing into the stairwell.
