Chapter 9 - The Missing Leaf

The click of the handcuffs echoing through the bright modern kitchen seemed to freeze time itself. Julian stood rigidly against the quartz countertop, his wrists locked behind his back in cold metal, yet his expression remained unnervingly calm. He didn't struggle against Officer Miller; instead, he tilted his head back and offered a low, guttural chuckle that sent a shiver down David’s spine.
"You can cuff me all you want, Miller," Julian said, his voice dripping with absolute arrogance. "The asset transfer was executed under digital seal at 9:00 AM this morning. Even if you drag me downtown, the blockchain doesn't care about handcuffs. The money has already cleared three international jurisdictions."
Marcus dropped heavily to his knees, letting the leather-bound ledger slide across the tile floor toward Officer Miller’s boots. "He's lying. I intercepted the physical routing keys from his courier ten minutes ago. The final authorization requires a biometric thumbprint or the original physical signature leaf stored in mother's safe."
Clara stepped forward, her green silk blouse catching the harsh morning light as she pointed a steady finger down at Julian. "Which means the transfer is incomplete. The digital seal is nothing more than a placeholder until the physical leaf is countersigned."
Officer Miller glanced down at the leather ledger, using his boot to nudge it closer before securing it in his tactical pouch. He looked back up at Julian with a narrowed gaze. "Looks like your sophisticated corporate crime syndicate forgot about old-fashioned paper, Julian."
Julian’s smirk finally faltered, his jaw tightening as he realized the fatal oversight. "The safe combination was changed yesterday. Nobody in this house could have accessed the physical leaf without the master override code."
All eyes in the kitchen slowly turned toward Margaret, who sat motionless in her motorized wheelchair. The elderly woman’s face, usually slack and distant, wore an expression of terrifying, crystal-clear awareness. She slowly raised her right hand, her arthritic fingers trembling slightly, and pressed her thumb against the silver ring she wore around her neck—a ring that doubled as the physical mechanical key for the wall safe hidden behind the pantry dry-erase board.
"I never changed the combination, Julian," Margaret whispered, her voice cutting through the silence like a blade. "I just pretended to forget it so I could watch you all tear each other apart over money you didn't earn."
David staggered backward, his knees hitting the edge of the kitchen island as the horrifying truth washed over him. "Mother... you knew about the embezzlement the entire time?"
Margaret didn't answer immediately. She slowly turned her head to look at Elena, who offered a quiet, professional nod of confirmation.

Before anyone could process the depth of the deception, the house's integrated security system screeched to life with a deafening alarm, and every overhead light in the kitchen suddenly blinked off, plunging the room into abrupt, suffocating darkness.
