Chapter 5 - The Blue Pills

The accusation hung in the sunlit kitchen like a physical blow. Julian stared down at Margaret, his practiced corporate composure fracturing for a split second before he managed to pull his mask of cool indifference back into place. He slowly bent down, retrieved his gold fountain pen from the tile floor, and tucked it carefully back into his breast pocket.

"The old woman's mind is completely gone," Julian said smoothly, though a faint sheen of sweat had formed along his hairline. "Accusing me of tampering with medication is a serious federal offense, Aunt Margaret, even if you can't remember what day of the week it is."

"She remembers everything that matters, Julian," Clara countered, her eyes flashing with sudden fury. She strode over to the stainless steel refrigerator, opened the small side cabinet reserved for medical supplies, and pulled out a translucent plastic pill organizer. She flipped open the Monday compartment and held it out for everyone to see. Inside sat two identical white oval pills alongside a small, unmarked blue capsule that clearly did not belong in a standard geriatric regimen.

David stared at the blue capsule, his face draining of all color. "Where did you find that, Clara? I checked this organizer yesterday morning, and that capsule wasn't there."

"Because I removed the original one and replaced it with a harmless vitamin supplement three hours ago," Clara said, her voice deadpan. "I knew someone was tampering with her evening sedative to make her compliant when signing financial transfers. Elena noticed the behavioral shifts last Tuesday. Didn't you, Elena?"

Elena nodded slowly, her expression grim as she adjusted the blanket over Margaret's legs. "Mrs. Vance became unusually compliant whenever Mr. Julian called or visited. Her cognitive tests showed acute chemical suppression. I documented every single instance in my personal shift log, which I synced to an encrypted cloud drive off-site."

Julian’s eyes darted toward Elena, a dangerous glint entering his gaze. "You've been keeping unauthorized logs? That's a direct breach of patient confidentiality and your employment contract."

"My contract requires me to report suspected elder abuse and financial exploitation to the authorities," Elena replied without blinking. "And my cloud backup is currently transmitting everything—including the audio from this conversation—to my agency's legal department as we speak."

David lunged forward, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his expensive Italian suit. "You poisoned her? You actually poisoned our mother just to force a signature on the trust documents?"

Before Julian could answer, the front security monitor mounted on the kitchen wall flickered to life with a sharp, electronic beep. A high-definition camera feed showed a pair of local police cruisers pulling into the driveway, their blue and red emergency lights flashing silently against the bright suburban daylight.

Julian smiled, a chilling, triumphant expression. "You fools. You didn't call the police, did you? Because I did, five minutes before I walked through your front door, reporting a violent home invasion in progress at this exact address."
