Chapter 7 - The Knock on the Door

The front door swung open with a heavy creak, revealing the imposing figure of Officer Miller standing in the entryway. His dark uniform was crisp, his duty belt jingling softly as he stepped across the threshold, instinctively placing a hand near his service weapon. The flashing red and blue lights from the cruisers outside cast long, eerie shadows across the hardwood floor of the hallway.
"Dispatch received a silent panic alarm combined with an emergency call reporting a violent altercation at this address," Officer Miller announced, his voice carrying clearly into the kitchen. "Everyone stay where your hands are visible. I want no sudden movements."
David raised his hands instinctively, taking a step toward the hallway. "Officer Miller, thank God. You need to hear this—"
"Stop right there, David," Miller interrupted, holding up a palm. "I see you, Julian. And Clara, put down whatever you're holding. I can see you through the kitchen pass-through."
Clara slowly raised her empty hands, stepping back from the kitchen island. "I'm not holding anything, Officer. My brother over there was just staging a theatrical rescue, but the real criminal is standing right next to me in the tailored suit."
Julian offered a disarming, polite smile, raising his hands in a gesture of total cooperation. "Officer, I arrived here five minutes ago to check on my ailing aunt after receiving frantic calls from neighbors reporting shouting and erratic behavior inside the residence. Upon entering, I found Mr. Vance and his sister engaged in a violent dispute over financial documents while the caregiver was locked out of communication."
Elena stepped smoothly from behind Margaret's wheelchair, holding the zippered bag visibly in her hands. "That is entirely false, Officer Miller. I am Elena Ross, the primary licensed caregiver. I initiated the panic signal after discovering unauthorized prescription tampering and illegal financial coercion directed at Mrs. Vance."
Officer Miller strode past David into the kitchen, his sharp eyes scanning the room, taking in the pill organizer on the counter, the crumpled bank statement in David's hand, and Margaret’s pale, unresponsive expression. He stopped inches from Julian, his expression hardening.
"Julian Vance," the officer said, recognition dawning in his tone. "Last time I saw you, you were lawyering up for a federal securities fraud case. What are you doing in a private residential care facility?"
Julian's smile strained. "I am a member of this family, Officer. I have every legal right to check on the welfare of my aunt."
"Not when there's an active restraining order filed by the probate court restricting you from approaching within five hundred feet of this property," Officer Miller replied smoothly, pulling a digital notebook from his tactical vest. "Dispatch just flagged your license plate in the driveway. The restraining order was renewed yesterday afternoon."
Julian’s face went completely rigid, the color draining from his cheeks. He slowly lowered his hands, his eyes darting toward the open back exit leading to the garden.

Before Julian could make a single move toward the back door, a loud crash echoed from the front hallway, followed by the sound of heavy breaking glass.
