Chapter 8 - The Shattered Window

The sharp sound of shattering glass echoed through the house, cutting off the tense silence in the kitchen like a gunshot. Officer Miller instantly drew his service weapon, spinning on his heel and aiming down the dark hallway toward the foyer.
"Stay back!" Miller barked, his voice echoing authoritatively off the high ceilings. "Police! Show your hands immediately!"
David stumbled backward against the kitchen counter, knocking a ceramic mug that shattered against the floor tiles. Clara grabbed the back of Margaret’s wheelchair, pulling the elderly woman deeper into the safety of the kitchen alcove while Elena planted herself protectively in front of them.
Julian didn't look scared; instead, a strange, knowing smirk flickered across his face as he watched the dark corridor. "It seems," Julian murmured smoothly, "that I wasn't the only one invited to this morning's little family reunion."
Heavy, frantic footsteps thudded against the hardwood floor of the entryway, accompanied by harsh breathing and the sound of someone scrambling over broken windowpanes. A tall figure in a dark hooded sweatshirt burst around the corner into the bright light of the kitchen, stumbling awkwardly before catching themselves against the doorframe.
It was Marcus, David and Clara’s younger, estranged brother, whom everyone believed was currently stranded overseas dealing with personal bankruptcy. His face was pale, his knuckles scraped and bleeding, and in his right hand, he clutched a heavy, leather-bound ledger identical to the one missing from the estate safe.
"Don't shoot!" Marcus gasped, raising his bloody hands in the air as Officer Miller’s service weapon leveled directly at his chest. "I'm not here to hurt anyone! I came to drop this off before Julian's people intercepted my car on the interstate!"
Officer Miller kept his weapon trained on Marcus while stepping backward to maintain tactical control of the room. "Drop whatever is in your hand right now and drop to your knees, or you will be tased."
"Wait, Miller, don't!" Clara shouted, stepping out from the alcove. "That's my brother Marcus! He's the one who took the original trust ledger for safekeeping!"
Julian laughed softly, shaking his head. "Look at this family reunion. Thieves, liars, and lunatics, all gathered under one roof to divide up an inheritance before the body is even cold."
Marcus ignored Julian, his wild, frantic eyes locking onto David. "They cleaned out the Cayman accounts yesterday, David. Everything is gone. Not just mother's trust—our entire corporate reserve has been transferred to an offshore shell company controlled by Julian's primary partner!"
David stared at Marcus in absolute horror, the crumpled bank statement falling from his numb fingers to flutter softly against the broken ceramic shards on the floor.
Julian casually reached into his breast pocket once more, but this time, Officer Miller was faster.
"Hands on the counter, Julian! Do it now!" Miller commanded, stepping forward and grabbing Julian's arm with professional force.
As the cold steel of handcuffs clicked sharply around Julian's wrists, Margaret slowly lifted her head from the wheelchair, her eyes clearing entirely of their haze as she looked directly at Marcus.

"You forgot the signature page, Marcus," Margaret said, her voice steady and chillingly sharp. "The transfer isn't legal without my fingerprint on the final leaf."
