Chapter 11 - Locked Inside the Pantry

The heavy oak pantry door slammed shut with a deafening thud, plunging David into total, suffocating darkness. The air inside smelled faintly of stored flour, old spices, and cedarwood. Outside, the blaring security alarm was muffled, reduced to a dull, rhythmic thumping that matched the frantic beating of David’s own heart.

"David! Can you hear us?" Clara’s voice filtered through the thick wood, muffled but urgent.

David pressed his palms flat against the inner panel, his breath fogging up the cold surface. "I'm locked in! The automated security lock engaged the moment I tripped the release latch!"

"Stand back, Mr. Vance! Let me handle the door!" Officer Miller’s voice boomed from the kitchen.

A heavy thud echoed against the exterior of the pantry door as the police officer threw his weight against the wood. The structure groaned under the impact, but the reinforced electronic deadbolt held firm.

Inside the dark pantry, David’s hand brushed against a cold metal shelf, knocking over a row of glass jars that shattered on the floor with a sharp, terrifying chime. As he crouched down to avoid the falling glass, his fingers encountered something unexpected tucked behind a crate of canned preserves—a heavy, leather-bound portfolio bearing the official seal of the Vance family trust, identical to the one Marcus had dropped in the kitchen.

With trembling fingers, David unlatched the portfolio's brass clasp and flipped open the cover. Inside, illuminated faintly by the sliver of red light bleeding under the door crack, was a series of handwritten legal addendums signed in deep blue ink.

The name at the bottom of the primary beneficiary line wasn't Julian, and it wasn't even Clara or Marcus.

It was Elena Ross.

Before David could fully process the name, the heavy wooden door exploded inward with a splintering crash. Officer Miller stood in the doorway, his flashlight cutting through the dust, his service weapon still drawn.

"Are you alright?" Miller demanded, grabbing David by the collar and pulling him out into the dimly lit kitchen.

David stumbled onto the tile floor, clutching the leather portfolio tightly to his chest. He looked across the room where Elena stood calmly beside Margaret’s wheelchair. The elderly woman’s breathing had stabilized, her oxygen unit whirring softly once again as the auxiliary generator kicked in.

Elena looked down at David, her expression entirely devoid of surprise. She reached out and calmly pulled the portfolio from his unresisting fingers.

"Thank you for finding that, Mr. Vance," Elena said softly, her voice carrying a chilling, absolute authority. "I've been looking for my inheritance papers all morning."
