Chapter 9

The emergency staircase was cold, narrow, and smelled faintly of damp concrete and industrial oil. Clara clutched Lily tightly against her shoulder, using her free hand to steady herself on the rusted metal handrail as they descended floor after floor beneath the luxury high-rise. The rhythmic clacking of their shoes echoed off the unpainted walls, sounding far too loud in the subterranean quiet.
Julian led the way, his black blazer blending into the shadows, his hand resting casually near his concealed weapon. Every muscle in his tall frame was coiled like a spring, attuned to the slightest sound from the concrete shafts above them.
"How much further?" Clara whispered, her breath frosting slightly in the chilled air of the service stairwell.
"Two more levels," Julian replied without looking back. "We're dropping below the city's main sewer line. This building was originally an old industrial warehouse before my firm bought the air rights and built the luxury tower on top. The basement has historical zoning protection—meaning Marcus’s smart-system overrides don't reach down here."
They reached the heavy fire door at the bottom of the stairwell. Julian pressed his ear against the metal, listening intently for several long seconds before punching a mechanical combination into an old-fashioned keypad. The heavy latch clicked open with a satisfying thud.
The sub-level parking garage was a cavernous, dimly lit labyrinth of concrete pillars and shadows. Rows of high-end luxury vehicles sat under protective covers, but Julian walked past them all, heading toward a rusted chain-link enclosure tucked away in the farthest, darkest corner of the sub-basement.
Inside the enclosure sat a pristine, midnight-blue 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1. It was a classic American muscle car, untouched by modern computer chips, GPS tracking, or digital ignition locks.
"My father's car," Julian said softly, pulling a heavy brass key from his pocket and unlocking the padlock on the chain-link gate. "Marcus doesn't even know this exists. It was registered under an old family trust before either of us were born."
Clara gently placed Lily in the back seat of the classic car, where the toddler curled up on the vintage leather upholstery, still sleeping soundly through the chaos. Clara tucked a wool blanket over her small shoulders, breathing a quiet sigh of relief.
Julian opened the driver's side door, the vintage metal creaking softly in the quiet garage. He slid behind the wheel and inserted the brass key into the ignition. The engine sputtered once, twice, and then roared to life with a deep, throaty purr that vibrated through the concrete floor.
He killed the headlights, relying only on the dim ambient glow of the garage as he shifted the car into reverse.

"Get in, Clara," Julian said, his eyes scanning the dark shadows near the exit ramp. "We have less than twenty minutes before Marcus's automated security audit flags the breach in the sub-level."
Clara hurried around the front of the car and slid into the passenger seat, pulling the heavy door shut. As Julian hit the gas and the Mustang surged toward the exit ramp, a row of red warning lights suddenly flashed to life on the concrete wall above them.
