Chapter 2

Julian did not move for ten agonizing seconds. The silence in the penthouse was absolute, broken only by the soft, rhythmic breathing of little Lily against Clara's chest. The amber light from the designer floor lamp cast long, distorted shadows across the imported hardwood floors.
"Try me," Julian said at last, his voice dropping into a register that vibrated through the quiet room. He shoved his tattooed hands into the pockets of his trousers, the motion catching the glint of his luxury timepiece. "Try me, Clara. Because I am running out of patience, and my daughter's sanity depends on whatever secret you are hiding in that cheap beige cardigan."
Clara adjusted the toddler slightly, her fingers brushing the soft pink cotton of Lily's pajamas. She looked up at Julian, taking in the heavy scruff along his jaw and the exhaustion etched deep around his dark eyes. He was a man holding a crumbling empire together with sheer willpower.
"I didn't steal the ring, Mr. Vance," Clara said, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper. "And I didn't find it in the laundry. Elena gave it to me."
Julian’s posture shifted instantly. The casual, guarded lean vanished, replaced by a rigid, coiled tension that made him look like a predator ready to strike. His hands snapped out of his pockets, the black rose tattoo catching the light.
"My wife has been dead for fourteen months," Julian said, each word enunciated with lethal precision. "She died in a car crash on the Westside Highway. Her body was identified by me. Her personal effects were handed to me in a sealed plastic bag by the precinct. Do not lie to my face about the dead."
"I am not lying," Clara insisted, fresh tears spilling over her lashes and tracking down her cheeks. "I met her three days before the accident. At a counseling center in Brooklyn. We... we talked about Lily. We talked about how much pressure you were under, and how terrified she was that you wouldn't know how to cope if anything ever happened to her."
Julian stared at her, his breathing noticeably shallow. The disbelief in his eyes slowly curdled into a dark, volatile suspicion.
"Elena never went to a counseling center in Brooklyn," Julian whispered, stepping closer until he was standing directly over Clara's chair. "She didn't know anyone in Brooklyn. Her entire life was Manhattan, architecture, and art galleries."
"She went there because she was trying to find someone she could trust," Clara shot back, a sudden surge of defensive adrenaline overriding her fear. "Someone who understood what it meant to lose everything and have to rebuild from the ashes. She gave me that ring as a token of faith. She said if I ever needed a safe harbor, I should come to you and show you the band."
Julian stared at her wedding finger, the platinum band winking under the lamp light. He reached out slowly, his large hand hovering inches from Clara's skin.

"If Elena gave you that ring," Julian murmured, his voice laced with venom, "then why did the police report state that every single piece of her jewelry was recovered from the wreckage except for the engagement diamond?"
Clara froze, her blood running cold as the implications of his words slammed into her chest.
