Chapter 5

The ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner of the living room suddenly sounded like a series of heavy hammer blows. Clara held Lily tighter against her chest, the toddler shifting in her sleep and letting out a soft, contented sigh that felt completely out of place in the charged, terrifying atmosphere of the room.
Julian didn't hesitate. The paralyzed grief vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, calculating survival instinct that had made him a titan in the cutthroat world of Manhattan real estate. He strode across the room with swift, silent steps, his black blazer swishing around his tall frame. He bypassed the main entrance and walked straight to a sleek mahogany wall panel near the kitchen archway.
"Stay here," Julian commanded in a low, authoritative whisper. He pressed his thumb against a biometric scanner hidden behind the wood grain. A soft click echoed through the room as a heavy steel panel slid back, revealing a recessed wall safe.
Clara watched anxiously, her eyes darting between Julian and the private foyer door. "What are you doing?"
"If Marcus knows you're here, and if he knows you have Elena's documents, this apartment is no longer safe," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of panic, though his jaw was clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently. He reached into the safe and pulled out a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol, checking the magazine with practiced familiarity before sliding it into an inside holster of his blazer.
The sight of the weapon sent a fresh wave of nausea through Clara's stomach. This wasn't a corporate dispute anymore. This was a war, and she and little Lily were right in the crossfire.
"I don't have the physical documents," Clara said quickly, keeping her voice low so as not to wake the child. "Elena hid them in a digital vault before she died. The access key is tied to the biometric chip embedded in the platinum ring on my finger."
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. He turned slowly, his dark eyes fixing on the ring once more. The realization hit him with physical force.
"That's why you couldn't take it off," Julian murmured, his voice laced with sudden, acute understanding. "It's not just a wedding band. It's a hardware key."
Before Clara could answer, a sharp, metallic sound cut through the quiet of the penthouse.
Clack-click.
It was the unmistakable sound of a heavy-duty skeleton key turning in the deadbolt of the private service elevator entrance.
Julian reacted instantly. He crossed the room in two long strides, his hand instinctively resting over the concealed firearm beneath his blazer. He gestured sharply for Clara to retreat toward the shadowed hallway leading to the master suite.
"Get in the panic room behind the walk-in closet," Julian ordered, his voice an absolute command that left no room for argument. "Do not make a sound. If the door opens and it isn't me, use the emergency satellite phone to call the federal district attorney's office. The code is Elena's birthday."

Clara clutched Lily to her chest, her legs shaking as she backed away from the living room. "Julian, no, you can't face them alone—"
"Go!" Julian hissed, drawing the pistol from his holster as the heavy steel foyer door slowly began to swing inward, revealing the dim, empty corridor outside.
