Chapter 10

The red warning strobe lights cast an eerie, flashing crimson glow across the interior of the vintage Mustang. Julian's hands tightened on the wooden steering wheel, the tattooed rose on his skin stark against the dark grain.
"They triggered the perimeter lockout," Julian muttered, his voice cold and focused. He slammed his foot down on the accelerator, and the heavy engine roared, throwing the car forward into the steep, curving concrete exit ramp that led up to the street level.
"Julian, look!" Clara cried out, pointing through the windshield.
At the top of the ramp, blocking the heavy iron security gate that opened onto the alleyway, sat two black SUV vehicles with their high-beam headlights blindingly bright. Four men in dark tactical gear stepped out of the vehicles, their forms silhouetted against the night sky, blocking every possible exit route.
Julian didn't brake. Instead, he dropped the Mustang into a lower gear, the engine screaming in protest as the classic car accelerated violently up the incline.
"Hold onto Lily!" Julian shouted over the roar of the engine.
Clara turned around in her seat, throwing her arm across the backrest to shield the sleeping toddler as the car hurtled toward the blockade. Lily stirred slightly at the deafening noise, whimpering in her sleep, but remained trapped in her exhausted slumber.
The tactical guards at the top of the ramp raised their hands, shouting orders and drawing non-lethal deterrent weapons, expecting the car to stop.
Julian slammed on the horn, but didn't slow down by a single mile per hour. At the last possible second, he whipped the steering wheel hard to the left, sliding the rear tires across a patch of oiled concrete. The Mustang drifted sideways in a controlled, violent arc, smashing through the rusted chain-link side fence of the alleyway instead of hitting the SUVs head-on.
Metal shrieked and sparks showered across the windshield as the vintage car plowed through the barrier, bouncing heavily onto the slick asphalt of the narrow downtown alley.
Julian straightened the wheel, flooring the gas pedal as the Mustang surged into the labyrinth of side streets, leaving the bewildered tactical team far behind in the smoke and flashing red lights.
The car raced through the deserted pre-dawn streets of Manhattan, weaving through traffic with reckless, desperate precision. Clara let out a long, ragged breath, her hands shaking as she checked on Lily in the back seat. The toddler was still safely tucked beneath her blanket, miraculously undisturbed by the chaos.
"Are you okay?" Julian asked, his eyes darting to the rear-view mirror before locking back onto the dark road ahead. His voice had lost its cold edge, replaced by a raw, protective warmth.
"I'm fine," Clara whispered, looking over at him in the dim dashboard light. "Where are we going?"
May you like
"A safe house my father built in upstate New York," Julian said, his jaw set in a hard line. "Marcus can't touch us there. And we can finally use the ring to decrypt Elena's files."
As they crossed the bridge leaving the city behind, the first pale rays of dawn began to break over the horizon, illuminating the dark road ahead. But just as the tension in the car began to subside, the dashboard radio flickered to life on its own, broadcasting a chilling automated emergency alert.
