Chapter 8

The heavy steel door of the panic room swung open, spilling a sliver of warm ambient light into the dark walk-in closet. Julian stood in the doorway, his chest heaving beneath the black blazer, the Sig Sauer still clutched in his tattooed hand. He looked down at Clara, who was sitting on the floor with Lily still safely cradled in her arms.
"He's gone," Julian whispered, his voice rough and strained. He holstered the weapon and dropped to his knees beside her, his large hands hovering uncertainly over Clara's shoulders before gently pulling her into an embrace. "It's over for tonight. You're safe."
"He knows about the Zurich accounts," Clara whispered back, burying her face against his shoulder, careful not to disturb the sleeping child. "Julian, if he knows about the Swiss shell corporation, he has a backdoor into your financial network. He's going to wipe everything out by morning."
Julian pulled back, his dark eyes fierce and determined. He reached out and gently took Clara's left hand, the one adorned with Elena's platinum ring. Under the dim overhead light of the closet, the polished metal seemed to pulse with a faint, iridescent sheen.
"He can't touch the primary archive," Julian said softly. "Because it's not on a server in Zurich. It's stored locally on a quantum-encrypted microchip embedded inside this ring."
Clara stared down at her finger in shock. "Elena didn't just give me a wedding band. She gave me the master key to your entire corporate empire."
"She trusted you more than she trusted my own board of directors," Julian murmured, his thumb brushing over the smooth platinum surface. "When she walked out of this apartment fourteen months ago, she knew Marcus was watching our every move. She needed someone completely off the grid to hold the key until the right moment."
"And that moment is now," Clara said, her voice steadying as the fear gave way to resolve. She looked up into Julian's tired, rugged face. "What do we need to do?"
Julian stood up, offering his tattooed hand to help Clara to her feet. She took it, hoisting Lily onto her hip with practiced ease.
"We need to leave Manhattan," Julian said flatly, striding toward the master bedroom. "Marcus has compromised the building's security protocols. By sunrise, his corporate lawyers will have frozen all our assets and filed an emergency injunction against me, claiming I'm mentally unfit to run the firm."
Clara followed him out into the sprawling, darkened penthouse, her mind racing. "Where can we go? Every major highway and airport will be monitored."

Julian stopped by the private elevator, punching a complex series of override codes into the digital keypad. The wall panel slid open to reveal a narrow, hidden spiral staircase plunging down into the bowels of the building.
"To the underground loading dock," Julian said, looking back at her with grim determination. "To a vintage car my grandfather left me—one that has no digital tracking chips and no computer network."
