Chapter 9

The crunch of heavy boots outside the janitorial supply room window grew closer, pausing just beneath the rusted iron grating. Leo grabbed Clara’s arm, pulling her back into the deep shadows behind a towering stack of industrial detergent barrels.
They held their breath as a gloved hand gripped the exterior window frame, rattling the latch to check if it was unlocked. The glass shook with a dull, grating sound against the dried putty. After a tense moment, the footsteps resumed, crunching away across the gravel toward the main athletic wing.
Clara let out a shaky breath, her shoulders sagging slightly.
“That was campus security,” Clara whispered, wiping a bead of sweat from her forehead. “They’re sweeping every perimeter exit. If we try to cross the courtyard to get to the locker rooms during fifth period, we’ll walk right into their sights.”
Leo shook his head, kneeling beside the VCR deck to eject the master magnetic tape. He slid the black cassette carefully into his hoodie pocket, making sure it wouldn't rattle.
“We aren't going across the courtyard,” Leo said, his voice steady and determined. “We’re taking the old utility service tunnel beneath the gymnasium floor. My older brother showed it to me when he was on the wrestling team. It runs straight from this basement level to the back of the varsity locker room rows.”
Clara hesitated, looking down at her bruised hand and her scuffed uniform shoes. The physical toll of the morning was catching up to her, but the thought of letting Vance and Mrs. Henderson win fueled a stubborn, unyielding strength inside her.
“Lead the way,” Clara said quietly.
They slipped out of the supply room through a heavy fire door that opened into a dark, concrete sub-level beneath the school’s main athletic wing. The air here was humid, thick with the smell of chlorine from the indoor pool and old rubber mats. Above them, muffled by concrete and steel, the faint sound of gym shoes squeaking against the hardwood court signaled the start of fifth-period athletics.
Leo guided them along the damp wall, moving with practiced caution until they reached a low wooden access panel painted to match the surrounding paneling. A brass latch held it shut, secured only by a simple sliding bolt from the inside—proof that whoever had built it hadn't expected anyone to approach from the basement side.
Leo slid the bolt back with a soft click, pushing the panel inward to reveal a narrow, dimly lit crawlspace that smelled strongly of gym chalk and laundry detergent.
Through the opening, they could see the rows of gray metal lockers stretching down the length of the girls’ varsity changing room.
“Look,” Clara whispered, pointing toward Locker 312—her own assigned locker.
Parked directly in front of her locker was Vice Principal Miller, holding a manila envelope in one hand while using a master key to twist the combination lock open.
Leo pulled Clara back into the shadows of the crawlspace just as Miller slid the locker door open and reached inside, preparing to plant the stolen exam keys right where Clara’s books were stacked.
“He’s doing it right now,” Clara hissed, her voice trembling with anger.

Leo reached into his pocket, his fingers curling around the heavy metal wrench he had grabbed from the supply room floor.
“Not for long,” Leo whispered, slipping through the panel into the locker room behind Miller’s back.
