Chapter 1

The heavy air in Room 304 tasted like chalk dust and fear.
Mrs. Henderson stood over thirteen-year-old Clara, her dark blazer stiff against her shoulders, her hair pulled back into a severe, unforgiving bun. Clara sat at her wooden desk, her long dark brown hair shielding her face as silent tears dripped onto her school uniform tie.
Mrs. Henderson’s voice cut through the stifling silence.
“Why didn't you let him copy your test?”
Before Clara could force a breath through her tight throat, Leo jumped up from his desk two rows away. His blue zip-up hoodie rustled as he shoved his chair back, his curly brown hair framing a face flushed with righteous fury. He slammed his palms onto the laminate surface.
“Because he's your son! So we're supposed to let him cheat?”
Mrs. Henderson snapped her head toward Leo, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. The veins in her neck tightened beneath her grey top.
“Sit down! Hand out.”
Her voice brooked no argument, holding the weight of a tyrant accustomed to absolute obedience. She turned her glare back to Clara, lifting the heavy wooden ruler in her right hand. Clara trembled, her lower lip bleeding slightly where she had bitten it raw. Slowly, with agonizing reluctance, Clara extended her left hand palm upward across the scarred wood of her desk.
Mrs. Henderson didn't hesitate. She brought the wooden ruler down with a sharp, echoing crack across Clara’s open palm. Clara winced violently, biting back a sob, instantly clutching her red, burning hand to her chest as she curled inward like a dying leaf.
Leo watched the abuse unfold, his breath catching in his throat. A raw, blinding shock washed over his features. Without thinking, he spun around on his heel, leaped onto his chair, and reached upward toward the upper corner of the classroom wall. His fingers found the heavy wire of the school’s closed-circuit security camera. With a fierce, desperate yank, he ripped the cable straight out of the terminal housing.
The small circular lens flickered once, transitioning instantly from a steady, passive green light to a pulsing, violent red emergency beacon.
Mrs. Henderson dropped the ruler, her face draining of color as she stared at the dead feed.
“Leo, what have you done?” she hissed, stepping away from Clara.
May you like
Leo dropped back to the floor, his chest heaving, holding the severed cable in his fist like a trophy.
“I saved it,” Leo breathed, his eyes wide with adrenaline. “And everyone is going to see what you really are.”
