Chapter 11

The squeak of dozens of basketball sneakers stopped dead as Leo and Clara burst onto the center court of the crowded gymnasium. Four hundred students sitting on the retractable bleachers turned simultaneously, their collective silence creating an oppressive, heavy atmosphere.
Up on the elevated judges' stage at the far end of the court, Principal Vance sat at a folding table alongside two stern-looking men in expensive business suits—state educational inspectors who had arrived unannounced for the annual funding review.
Principal Vance stood up immediately, adjusting his tie as he forced a smooth, professional smile onto his face.
“Ah, perfect timing,” Vance announced into the wireless microphone clipped to his lapel, his voice booming across the cavernous gym. “Students Reyes and Miller have chosen our annual audit assembly to address the school regarding their recent behavioral infractions.”
Leo stood in the center of the hardwood court, chest heaving, holding the manila envelope high in his right hand. Clara stood firmly by his side, her head held high, ignoring the whispers rippling through the bleachers.
“We aren't here to confess,” Leo shouted into the open air, his voice echoing off the rafters without a microphone. “We’re here to show everyone what Principal Vance and Vice Principal Miller have been hiding in the basement archives!”
Principal Vance’s smile vanished instantly. He slammed his palms onto the folding table, taking two rapid strides toward the edge of the stage.
“Security!” Vance barked into his lapel mic, his voice losing all pretense of calm. “Remove these students from the gymnasium immediately! They are trespassing and carrying stolen property!”
Two massive campus security guards in dark uniforms sprinted out from the side exits, closing in on Leo and Clara from both flanks.
Clara didn't flinch. She reached into her school blazer, pulled out the master magnetic tape cassette they had retrieved from the VCR deck, and held it up for the entire student body to see.
“This tape contains unedited recordings of the administration altering freshman test scores!” Clara’s voice rang out, clear and unyielding. “They framed us for academic theft to cover up a four-year systemic fraud ring!”
The murmurs in the bleachers erupted into a chaotic roar of shouting and whispered shock. Several students in the front row—including the curly-haired boy’s closest friends—stood up from the bleachers in support, creating a ripple of defiance through the crowd.
Principal Vance lunged off the stage, sprinting across the hardwood court himself, his face purple with rage.
“Don't listen to them! It’s fabricated lies!” Vance roared, lunging directly at Leo to snatch the tape from his hand.
Before Vance could reach them, the gymnasium’s massive overhead projector screen—usually reserved for athletic scoreboards—suddenly flickered to life behind the stage.
The screen flashed bright white, and the unmistakable audio of Principal Vance’s voice filled the entire gymnasium through the high-powered public address system.
“As long as our varsity athletes and scholarship candidates clear the district benchmarks, the state auditors look the other way...”

The entire gymnasium froze in absolute, stunned silence as the hidden audio recording began to play live for every student, teacher, and state inspector present.
Principal Vance stopped dead in his tracks on the hardwood floor, staring up at the screen with absolute horror painted across his face.
