Chapter 14

The typewritten words on the superintendent’s letterhead seemed to burn against the dim light of Room 304. Leo held the heavy brass master keys in his palm, their cold metallic weight feeling entirely too real after everything they had fought to expose.
Clara stared at the final line, her breath hitching in her throat.
“What does that even mean?” Clara whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she looked around the empty, silent classroom. “Vance is arrested, the inspectors are seizing the archives, and the state board is taking over. How can there still be a board?”
Leo folded the letter tightly, sliding it into his hoodie pocket along with the master keys. He walked over to the shattered window looking out toward the front gates, where police cruisers and news vans were parked bumper-to-bumper.
“Vance was just the face of it, Clara,” Leo said grimly, his eyes scanning the courtyard below. “He ran the local branch, but the system itself—the grade tampering, the donor payoffs, the manipulation of test scores across the entire county—it’s a network that goes all the way up to the state legislature.”
Before Clara could reply, the classroom’s intercom speaker above the blackboard suddenly hissed to life with a loud, piercing crackle of static.
Neither Principal Vance nor Vice Principal Miller was in the administrative office anymore. Yet a familiar, cold, measured voice filled the empty classroom, echoing off the bare walls.
“Congratulations on your thorough investigation, children,” Mrs. Henderson’s voice purred smoothly through the speaker, devoid of any panic or defeat. “You proved that corruption exists. But corruption is merely an administrative necessity when the system itself is built on impossible standards.”
Clara stepped back toward the door, her hands clenching into fists.
“You lost!” Clara shouted up at the intercom grille. “The state inspectors are downstairs! The entire district is being audited right now!”
