Chapter 8

The static on the analog television hissed softly, a comforting white noise against the tense silence of the janitorial supply room. Leo leaned closer, pressing a frayed button on the front panel of the VCR deck wired beneath the monitor.
The magnetic tape inside groaned, the reels spinning rapidly before locking onto a timestamped segment labeled OCTOBER 14 – AUDIT ROOM B.
The screen flickered, clearing away the snow to reveal a crisp, high-definition image of Principal Vance sitting behind a heavy mahogany desk. Standing across from him on the screen was a man in a sharp grey business suit—someone neither Leo nor Clara had ever seen before.
“The state education board is not going to ignore a thirty-percent drop in standardized test scores across the freshman class, Arthur,” the man on the screen said, his voice tinny but perfectly clear through the monitor’s built-in speaker.
Principal Vance leaned back in his leather chair, waving a hand dismissively.
“You worry too much, Director Hayes,” Vance replied smoothly on the recording. “The parents care about college acceptance rates, not raw data. As long as our varsity athletes and scholarship candidates clear the district benchmarks, the state auditors look the other way.”
Hayes leaned forward, slamming a manila folder onto the mahogany desk.
“And what about the students who refuse to cooperate?” Hayes demanded. “Like that girl in Room 304—Clara Miller? My sources say she caught wind of the grade adjustments last week. If she goes public with her midterm papers, the entire district falls like a house of cards.”
Leo glanced sideways at Clara. Hearing her own name spoken on a hidden government surveillance tape made her flinch, her bruised hand instinctively clutching her side.
On the screen, Principal Vance smiled a cold, calculating smile that sent a shiver down their spines.
“Let her try,” Vance said calmly on the monitor. “By the end of today, her locker will contain the stolen mid-term answer keys. Once campus security finds them during the routine fifth-period sweep, she’ll be facing felony theft charges. Nobody listens to a thief, Director. Her credibility will be completely destroyed before she ever reaches the press.”
Clara gasped, clapping both hands over her mouth to stop herself from crying out.
“They planned the entire thing,” Clara whispered, her voice shaking with raw betrayal. “They knew I wouldn't let him cheat, and they used it as an excuse to plant the evidence from the very beginning.”
Leo stood up from the monitor, his fists clenched so tightly his nails bit into his palms. The helplessness he had felt in the classroom was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating fury of his own.
“They haven’t planted it yet,” Leo said, checking the digital clock glowing on the wall above the sink. It read 11:15 AM. “Fifth-period gym class starts in fifteen minutes. That’s when the entire student body is out in the gymnasium, leaving the lockers completely unattended.”
Clara looked at him, her eyes dark and resolute.
“What are you saying, Leo?”
“I’m saying we beat them to our own lockers,” Leo replied, stepping toward the supply room door. “We get the planted evidence out before security finds it, and we swap it with the master recording tape from this VCR.”

Before Clara could answer, a loud, heavy thud echoed against the exterior wall outside the supply room window, followed by the crunch of gravel under heavy boots.
Someone was patrolling the perimeter.
