Chapter 13 - Handcuffs in the VIP Lounge

The cold metal click of handcuffs echoing in the quiet VIP lounge sounded like a gunshot to Leo’s ears. He watched in frozen horror as two federal agents pinned Arthur’s arms behind his back, securing the cuffs with practiced efficiency. Arthur didn't resist; he stood completely still, his eyes locked firmly on Leo and Maya with an expression of intense, silent apology.
"This is a grave mistake, and your superiors know it," Arthur said, his voice entirely devoid of panic, carrying an icy, controlled fury. "Check the encrypted metadata on the video file uploaded yesterday. It will prove my foundation initiated the rescue operation before any financial subpoenas were ever filed."
"Save it for the magistrate, Mr. Vance," the lead agent replied flatly, turning Arthur toward the exit. As they passed the doorway, Arthur cast one final glance back at the children.
"Stay right here," Arthur instructed quietly. "My legal team will sort this out within the hour. Do not talk to anyone."
The heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving Senator Vance, Nurse Sarah, and the two children standing in a stunned, heavy silence. Senator Vance lowered herself slowly back onto the chair beside Maya’s bed, pressing her fingertips against her temples as if trying to stave off a sudden, blinding migraine.
"I am so sorry, children," Senator Vance whispered, her voice cracking slightly as she looked at Leo’s tear-stained face. "My nephew is a proud man, but political warfare in this city is ruthless. Sometimes the people trying to do the right thing are the first ones the system tries to crush."
"He lied to us," Leo said, his voice shaking with a bitter mixture of anger and despair. "He said he would protect us, and now he's gone just like everyone else."
"He didn't lie about saving you, Leo," Nurse Sarah said firmly, stepping forward and placing a gentle hand on the boy's shoulder. "Look at what he did yesterday. Maya is getting better, your mother is in a real medical facility, and the whole world finally knows your story. Don't let a political stunt erase the truth."
Maya sniffled, wiping her eyes with the corner of the blanket. "Can we go see Mom now? I don't care about the building or the news. I just want our family back together."
Senator Vance nodded slowly, her expression hardening into a look of fierce determination. She pulled a gold-plated fountain pen from her coat pocket and scribbled something rapidly on a notepad, tearing the paper off and handing it to Nurse Sarah.
"Take them to County General in my private transport," the senator commanded, her voice regaining its powerful political authority. "I’m going downtown to the federal courthouse. If the district attorney thinks he can railroad my family to bury a municipal corruption scandal, he has another thing coming."
As Senator Vance hurried out of the room, Nurse Sarah helped Maya unplug her IV drip and put on her pink hoodie. Leo grabbed his blue hoodie, sliding it on as they walked out into the hospital corridor.

They thought the worst was behind them. They had no idea that waiting for them downstairs in the hospital lobby was a figure they thought they would never see again.
