Chapter 8

The realization that he had been neatly categorized as expendable hit General Harrison harder than the threat of federal indictment. He looked down at the empty crystal champagne glass sitting beside his plate, the bubbles long since flat. A lifetime of loyal service, compromised compromises, and quiet obedience to powerful men had culminated in this exact moment: sitting at a white-clothed table in a glittering ballroom, abandoned by the very syndicate he had protected for over a decade.

Elena stood up smoothly from her chair, the heavy fabric of her maroon evening gown whispering against the carpet. The movement drew the immediate attention of half the room. Conversations died down instantly, and dozens of pairs of eyes locked onto her as she straightened her posture and smoothed the front of her dress. She did not look back at Mrs. Vance-Smythe or Officer Marcus. Her focus was entirely singular, anchored on the objective that lay beyond the ballroom doors.

"Arthur," Elena said, her voice carrying clearly across the quieted hall. "Secure the perimeter outside. General Harrison is coming with us to assist with the recovery of the municipal archives."

The general stiffened, his military training instincts warring with his complete sense of defeat. He slowly pushed his chair back and rose to his feet, adjusting the jacket of his uniform with a pathetic dignity. He knew there was no escape. The doors of the Grand Meridian were no longer an exit; they were simply the threshold to accountability. As Elena turned and began walking toward the main entrance, General Harrison fell into step two paces behind her, a broken soldier following the commander he had foolishly underestimated.

Mrs. Vance-Smythe remained seated at the table, her hands clenched tightly into fists in her lap, the diamonds on her fingers flashing angrily in the amber chandelier light. She watched Elena’s retreating figure with a look of pure, unadulterated venom, realizing too late that the old rules of power no longer applied in this city. The Director of Federal Oversight had not come to negotiate a settlement or accept a polite bribe; she had come to dismantle their world brick by brick.
