Chapter 3

The silence that followed the general’s apology was heavier than the crystal chandelier overhead. General Harrison stared intensely at the black badge in his palm, his chest heaving as the terrible reality of the situation washed over him. The wide-eyed panic in his gaze gave way to a sudden, hot wave of humiliation and rage, directed entirely inward. He looked from the badge to Elena, his mind racing through every classified briefing, every suppressed internal report, and every illegal procurement contract his command had rubber-stamped over the past three years.

"Do you know who she really is?" the military general demanded angrily, his voice dropping to a harsh, resonant whisper that cut through the surrounding murmur of the banquet hall like a razor blade. He turned his glare onto Officer Marcus, who was still standing at attention, sweating profusely under the harsh glare of his superiors. The general’s face mottled with dark crimson. "She isn't just an auditor, you absolute fool. She is the Director of Federal Oversight."

The elderly woman in the blue velvet dress gasped softly, her hand flying to her chest as the full implication of the title settled over her. Mrs. Eleanor Vance-Smythe—no relation to Elena, despite the shared aristocratic surname—had spent decades cultivating influence in this city, believing herself immune to the shifting tides of government oversight. Now, looking at the young woman in the maroon gown, Eleanor felt a cold shiver run down her spine. The golden age of unbridled corruption and backroom municipal deals was coming to a screeching halt, right here beneath the American flag.

Elena finally broke her silence, her voice smooth, measured, and devoid of any theatrical inflection. "At ease, General," she said quietly, her tone carrying the terrifying authority of absolute truth. "Put the badge back on the table. We are not here to make a scene in front of the donors. We are here to talk about the missing three hundred million dollars allocated for the municipal disaster relief fund." The mention of the missing funds acted like a physical blow. General Harrison visibly shrank back into his seat, his uniform suddenly feeling far too tight. The game of high-stakes deception they had played for years had finally met its match.
