Chapter 10

The heavy iron door of the warehouse yielded with a dull, echoing screech as federal marshals breached the threshold. Inside, the cavernous space smelled of damp cardboard, dust, and the acrid, chemical tang of lighter fluid. Four startled men jumped back from a rusted metal drum where a tongue of orange flame was already licking at the edges of the top archival box.
"Federal Oversight! Step away from the burn barrel!" Arthur Pendelton’s voice rang out, sharp and authoritative, bouncing off the concrete floors and exposed steel rafters.
The contractors threw their hands up instantly, offering no argument as two marshals moved in with practiced efficiency, kicking the base of the burn barrel to scatter the fuel and smother the fledgling fire before it could consume the vital documents within. One of the marshals wrenched the lid shut, cutting off the oxygen supply and preserving the contents of the container. The second team fanned out, securing the remaining wooden pallets stacked neatly against the damp brick walls.
Elena walked into the warehouse at a measured, unhurried pace. Her heavy trench coat swept the concrete floor as she approached the industrial drum. She looked down into the smoldering container, noting the charred corners of the top manifest sheet. It was a close margin—another three minutes, and decades of financial malfeasance would have drifted up into the night sky as harmless gray smoke, leaving the perpetrators untouchable.

Arthur knelt beside one of the wooden pallets, unstrapping the plastic shrink-wrap with a pocketknife to inspect the labels. "Director, these are the original bank reconciliation statements from the disaster relief fund accounts dating back to the initial transfer authorization. The signatures match the ones we pulled from General Harrison’s office."
General Harrison, escorted into the warehouse by two marshals, looked down at the stacked boxes with a hollow, defeated expression. The physical proof of his undoing was right there before him, no longer an abstract digital file or a theoretical allegation, but tangible, undeniable stacks of paper bearing his own hand-written notations in the margins. He lowered his head, the last vestiges of his military pride completely stripped away.
