Chapter 7 - The Distorted Voice

The synthetic, mechanical voice filled the high-rise apartment, bouncing off the triple-paned glass and echoing strangely in the sophisticated dining room. Marcus. Time is nearly up. Did you flip the coin, or should I drop the hammer on Maya?
Marcus stared at the small black rectangle resting on the white marble table, his chest heaving as he fought to control his breathing. Maya sat frozen across from him, her eyes glued to the phone as if it were a venomous snake coiled ready to strike. The red numbers on the digital timer inside the open briefcase glowed ominously on the floor: 04:12... 04:11...
"Who are you?" Marcus demanded, his voice cracking slightly before he forced a steely edge into his tone. "What do you want? We can negotiate whatever terms you are looking for. Just leave her out of this."
The synthetic voice emitted a low, grating chuckle—a digital distortion designed to mask human inflection completely. "Negotiate? Oh, Marcus, you misunderstand your position entirely. You are not at a boardroom table anymore. You are standing at the edge of the fortieth floor, and I am the one holding your ankles."
"State your demands," Maya cut in, her voice surprisingly steady as she leaned toward the table, overriding Marcus’s hesitation. She refused to let a machine dictate her terror without a fight. "If it's money, name the figure. Every account can be liquidated within the hour."
"Money?" The voice sounded genuinely amused. "Maya, sweet Maya. You think this is about cash? You think a few million dollars can erase the ashes of the Henderson building? Some debts are paid in blood, not bank wires."
Marcus felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He shot a frantic look at Maya, trying to read her reaction, but her face was an unreadable mask of cold determination.
"If it's not money, then it's a confession," Maya said, her tone razor-sharp. "You want us to destroy each other in public so someone else can inherit the firm. Who hired you? Was it Vance? Did that snake crawl out of the woodwork?"
A momentary pause hung over the line. For two agonizing seconds, the only sound was the relentless ticking of the timer on the floor: 03:30... 03:29...
"Vance is a pedestrian player," the synthetic voice replied smoothly. "He lacks the vision for a masterpiece. No, Maya. The person pulling the strings is much closer to home. Someone sitting at this very table—or perhaps, someone who just left it."
Marcus’s head snapped up. He looked around the empty apartment, his eyes darting toward the dimly lit kitchen, the private elevator foyer, and the heavy oak doors leading to the master bedroom. "What are you talking about? We are alone here!"
"Are you?" the voice mocked softly. "Check the security feed on your home automation tablet, Marcus. See who deactivated the penthouse lock thirty seconds before I called."
Marcus didn't hesitate. He lunged across the table, grabbing the wall-mounted smart-home tablet near the dining area with trembling fingers, frantically swiping through the logs. The screen blinked open, displaying the access history for the private elevator.
His blood ran ice cold as he read the newest log entry.
"An override code was just entered," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling violently as he stared at the screen. "At eight-fifteen... from the internal study."
Maya gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "The internal study? But that room has been locked from the inside since this morning!"
May you like
Before Marcus could process the impossible realization, the smart-home screen flickered, and the live camera feed of their private hallway blinked on, revealing a familiar shadow stepping out of the study and walking straight toward the dining room.
