Chapter 6 - The Confession Trap The red numbers on the timer ticked relentlessly downward: 06:45... 06:44...

Marcus stared at the glowing screen of his smartphone, his mind paralyzed by the impossible ultimatum flashing before his eyes. Maya was sitting rigidly across from him, her posture completely transformed. The shock of his confession had curdled into a cold, impenetrable rage. She looked at him not as her husband of ten years, but as a total stranger—a criminal who had quietly built a foundation of lies beneath their entire life together.

"So," Maya said, her voice chillingly quiet, devoid of any warmth or tears. "Every luxury we have, every brick of this high-rise apartment, every single thing we built... was funded by a cover-up of a crime."

"Maya, please," Marcus pleaded, his hands hovering over the table, helpless. "We can talk about this, we can fix this, but we have to deal with the person pulling the strings first. Look at the timer. We have less than seven minutes before they blow our lives wide open."

"Let them," Maya replied flatly, crossing her arms over her brown blazer.

Marcus blinked, stunned. "What do you mean, let them? Do you understand what will happen? The note said you take the fall. They have fabricated evidence pointing directly to you as the primary beneficiary of the Henderson account."

"Let them try," Maya repeated, her dark eyes locking onto his with a fierce, dangerous resolve. "Because right now, Marcus, I don't know if you are protecting me, or if you are framing me to save your own skin."

"How could you even think that?" Marcus felt a surge of genuine hurt pierce through his panic. "I am sitting here taking the blame, admitting to a felony to keep you safe!"

"You just admitted that you kept a massive secret from me for three years," Maya retorted, leaning forward, the candlelight casting sharp, dramatic shadows across her face. "You lied to my face every single anniversary. How can I believe a single word coming out of your mouth right now? For all I know, you orchestrated this entire extortion plot to get rid of me and take full control of the firm's assets."

"That is insane!" Marcus shouted, losing his composure for a split second. He quickly reined it in, casting a frantic glance toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "Nobody is listening to us up here on the fortieth floor, but someone is watching every single move we make. Look at the briefcase. Look at the tech. This isn't amateur hour. This is a professional hit."

"Then call the police," Maya challenged, pointing at his phone. "Dial 911 right now. Tell them there is an extortion device in our apartment."

Marcus hesitated, his thumb hovering over the screen. "If I call the police, the blackmailer triggers the release of the file. Your mother's medical fund is wiped out instantly, and her care facility cuts her off by morning. Is that what you want?"

Maya flinched, the fight draining out of her for a brief second as her mother's name was invoked. Her lower lip trembled, but she forced herself to harden her expression once more.

Before she could respond, the smartphone buzzed violently in Marcus's hand. The screen flashed with a new incoming call from an unrecognized, restricted number.

"Answer it," Maya whispered, her eyes fixed on the device. "Let's hear what your partner in crime has to say."

Marcus swallowed hard, his finger swiping to accept the call, pressing the speaker button as he laid the phone carefully back down on the white marble table.

May you like

"Marcus," a distorted, synthetic voice crackled through the speaker, devoid of any human cadence. "Time is nearly up. Did you flip the coin, or should I drop the hammer on Maya?"
