Chapter 10 - The Hidden Line

The red numbers on the timer flickered frantically on the hardwood floor: 00:22... 00:21...

Marcus kept his hand buried deep in his pocket, his thumb pressing firmly against the smartphone screen. The call with the restricted number hadn't actually disconnected when Elena walked into the room; he had muted the audio output, keeping the line wide open. Every word Elena had spoken—every confession of industrial sabotage, extortion, and planned corporate theft—was currently being broadcasted live to an external receiver.

Whether that receiver was emergency services or an independent insurance repository, Marcus didn't yet know for certain, but it was their only lifeline left against Elena’s trap.

"Ten seconds, Marcus!" Elena barked, her calm facade finally cracking just a fraction as she stepped forward, extending the silver flash drive and a digital signing pad toward the white marble table. "Sign the transfer documents right now, or the bomb squad won't be the only ones visiting this penthouse!"

00:08... 00:07...

Maya didn't flinch. Instead of cowering, a sudden, fierce determination flared in her eyes. She didn't look at Marcus, nor did she look at the ticking timer. She looked directly past Elena, toward the smart-home tablet mounted on the wall.

"You calculated every variable, Elena," Maya said, her voice cutting through the tense air with surgical precision. "You planned the breach, you spoofed the biometrics, and you brought your little prop briefcase to scare us into submission."

"Five seconds!" Elena screamed, losing her composure as she jammed the signing pad onto the table. "*00:04... 00:03...*"

"Except for one thing," Maya finished coolly.

With a lightning-fast motion, Maya reached out and grabbed a heavy crystal wine decanter from the table, smashing it directly into the smart-home tablet's main emergency override box. Sparks flew in a brilliant shower of white light as the security system short-circuited violently.

00:00...

The digital timer stopped ticking. The red numbers froze entirely.

For one agonizing second, nothing happened. The apartment remained silent, save for the hum of the city far below. Elena blinked, staring down at the briefcase in shock. The timer hadn't detonated any explosives; instead, the top lid clicked open further, and a tiny, built-in speaker began playing a high-pitched, automated audio loop.

"Recording successfully uploaded to federal authorities," a neutral robotic voice announced across the room.

Elena’s face drained of all color in an instant. Her eyes widened in sheer disbelief as she looked from the briefcase to Marcus, who finally pulled his hand out of his pocket, holding his smartphone up to display an active call timer reading 12:45.

"You... you recorded everything," Elena whispered, her voice trembling as reality crashed down upon her.

"Every single word," Marcus replied coldly, stepping forward to block her exit toward the private elevator.

Before Elena could lunge for the flash drive or make a dash for the stairs, the heavy metal security doors of the private elevator chimed loudly, sliding open to reveal three armed federal agents stepping out into the foyer.

"Elena Vance," the lead agent announced, flashing a badge with absolute authority. "You are under arrest for corporate extortion, industrial sabotage, and wire fraud."

Elena froze, her shoulders slumping as the heavy steel cuffs clicked around her wrists. As the agents escorted her past them toward the elevator, she cast one final, venomous glance back at Maya and Marcus.

"You think you won?" Elena sneered softly as the elevator doors began to close around her. "Check your corporate ledger tomorrow morning. The real bomb hasn't even dropped yet."
