Chapter 2 - The Price of Protection

The weight of the smartphone in Marcus’s palm suddenly felt crushing, heavy as lead. The glowing screen reflected in his eyes, casting a stark blue tint over the warm candlelight. Maya was still leaning forward across the white marble dining table, her dark wavy hair shadowing her face, waiting for compliance. Her hand was outstretched, palm up, demanding the device that held the key to his compliance.

"Well?" Maya prompted, her voice dropping an octave, laced with an escalating impatience. "Are you going to hand it over, or are you going to keep pretending there is nothing to hide?"

Marcus swallowed hard, his throat dry. He pulled his hand back instinctively, drawing the phone closer to his chest. The movement was small, almost imperceptible, but to Maya, it was a confession.

"Marcus," she whispered, the anger draining from her voice, replaced by a cold, devastating disappointment. "You are actually refusing."

"It is not what you think," Marcus managed to say, his voice strained. He desperately needed to buy time, to calculate the angles of a trap he had unknowingly walked into. If he handed the phone over, the blackmailer would strip her ailing mother of the medical fund that kept her alive in a specialized care facility. If he refused, Maya’s trust in him would shatter irrevocably right here, tonight.

"Then prove it," Maya demanded, her eyes flashing with sudden, sharp tears she refused to let fall. "Open the chat. Read it out loud to me. Let me hear what is so confidential that it supersedes our marriage."

"I cannot do that."

"Why?" Maya slammed her hand against the table this time, making the wine glasses tremble. "Give me one valid reason why your wife cannot look at your screen!"

"Because it would destroy everything," Marcus blurted out, instantly regretting the slip.

Maya went completely still. The anger vanished, leaving behind a terrifying, hollow calm. "Everything? What does that mean? What did you do, Marcus?"

Before Marcus could formulate a lie to cover the terrifying truth, his phone buzzed again against his palm. The vibration rattled through his fingers like an electric shock. He looked down despite himself. Another notification had materialized from the same unknown sender, flashing brightly in the dim room.

"Look behind you," the new message commanded. "She is already watching from the hallway door."
