Chapter 12 - The Empty Vault

The glowing screen of the smartphone illuminated Marcus's pale face in the dimly lit dining room, casting harsh blue lines across his features. Transfer complete. Account balance: $0.00. The words hung in the quiet air like a death sentence.
Maya stepped forward, snatching the phone from his unresisting hand. Her eyes scanned the digital notification, darting rapidly across the lines of text detailing the complete liquidation of their life's work. The sophisticated firm they had spent a decade building from the ground up had been legally and cleanly gutted in less than the time it took to finish an anniversary dinner.
"Zero," Maya whispered, the word escaping her lips as a breathless gasp. She looked up at Marcus, her eyes wide with a terrifying blend of shock and cold realization. "She didn't just steal our data tonight, Marcus. She executed a hostile takeover while we were sitting right here arguing over table scraps."
"How is that possible?" Marcus ran a hand frantically through his short dark hair, his voice rising in panic. "Even with dual-key tokens, a transfer of this magnitude requires multi-factor authorization from both of us! We didn't approve anything!"
"Did we?" Maya’s voice dropped to a dangerous, chilling register. She held the phone out, pointing at the cryptographic signature attached to the transaction receipt. "Look at the authorization hash, Marcus. Whose digital fingerprint is stamped on this transfer?"
Marcus leaned in, squinting at the fine print on the screen. The cryptographic key listed wasn't Elena's. It wasn't a forged token. It was his own personal administrative key—the primary master code that only he possessed, secured by biometric facial recognition on his private workstation.
He stepped back as if the phone were burning hot. "That's impossible. I haven't touched the workstation all evening. I've been right here with you!"
"Have you?" Maya’s gaze narrowed, her eyes locking onto his with an intensity that felt like a physical blow. "You were checking your phone when we first sat down. You were staring at the screen while we argued about discretion. How long ago did you set up this contingency plan, Marcus?"
"You cannot possibly believe that I did this to myself!" Marcus shouted, his voice cracking with genuine outrage and fear. "Why would I liquidate our own firm and invite an extortionist into our home? That makes zero sense!"
"Unless you knew the federal investigation was closing in anyway," Maya retorted, her voice hard as steel. "Unless you were liquidating the assets to run, and Elena simply caught you in the act and tried to blackmail her way into a cut of the spoils!"
"Maya, listen to yourself," Marcus pleaded, reaching out to grab her shoulders, but she violently shook him off. "You are playing right into the trap she set. She wanted us to turn on each other so we wouldn't look at who actually pulled the trigger!"
"Then who else could it be?" Maya demanded, tears of frustration finally spilling over her lashes, though her voice remained razor-sharp. "Nobody else on earth has your master administrative key!"
Before Marcus could answer, the door-chime of the private elevator rang through the apartment.
Both of them froze instantly. The federal agents had already left with Elena. There was no one else scheduled to arrive.

The heavy steel doors slowly slid open, and a sleek, unmarked white envelope slid across the private elevator foyer floor, coming to a rest right at the edge of the hardwood living area.
