Chapter 2

The manila folder looked entirely ordinary, yet it hovered in Evelyn’s manicured hand like a guillotine blade ready to drop. Clara tightened her arms around Lily, feeling the infant’s tiny heart beat frantically against her own chest. The apartment had always felt small, but suddenly the walls seemed to press inward, suffocating every ounce of oxygen left in the room.

“What is that?” Clara demanded, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper as she tried to keep her composure in front of the baby. The sharp edge of panic clawed at her throat, threatening to break the fragile control she had maintained all afternoon.

Evelyn didn’t answer immediately. She tapped the heavy cardboard folder against her palm, savoring the agonizing delay. The dark red blouse she wore seemed to absorb the dim light, making her look less like a former mentor and more like an executioner delivering a final sentence.

“It’s the truth, Clara,” Evelyn said, her tone dripping with a calculated, sickening sweetness. “The kind of truth that doesn’t care about your little maternal melodrama. You think you’ve protected this child by locking the doors and screaming at the only person willing to help you. But you didn’t even read the fine print on the papers your precious late husband signed before he passed away.”

Clara shook her head, tears spilling over her lower lashes once more. “Mark didn’t hide anything from me. We shared everything. We built this life together.”

“Did you?” Evelyn sneered, stepping closer until Clara could smell the expensive perfume that masked a rotten core. “Mark was drowning in debts you couldn’t even spell, Clara. And the bank didn’t take this house. I did. The deed has my name on it, and it has for the last three months.”

The floor seemed to drop away beneath Clara’s bare feet. The pink robe felt suddenly heavy, like a lead weight dragging her toward an abyss. She looked down at Lily, who had quieted down, her little chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace, completely oblivious to the fact that they were standing on someone else’s property.

“You’re lying,” Clara choked out, the words tasting like ash. “You’re just trying to scare me into handing her over.”

“I don’t need to lie,” Evelyn whispered, her eyes narrowing as she peeled back the flap of the folder to reveal a signed legal document bearing a fresh stamp of ownership. “Pack your bags, Clara. You have twenty-four hours to leave my house. And as for the baby—the court date for emergency custody is already set for tomorrow morning.”
