Chapter 12

The heavy metal door of the interrogation room swung open once more, but this time the atmosphere shifted instantly. Two men in dark suits and windbreakers bearing the bold yellow letters FBI walked into the cramped space, flanked by federal marshals. The lead agent, a tall woman with sharp graying hair and an unsmiling expression, flashed her shield directly in front of the District Attorney’s face.
“Special Agent Ramos, Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the woman said, her voice crisp and authoritative. “Mr. Vance, I’d advise you to step away from the witness immediately unless you want to be added to our obstruction of justice indictment.”
District Attorney Vance recoiled as if he had been physically struck. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking older and remarkably smaller in his expensive suit. He stammered, pulling at his tie. “Agent Ramos, there’s been a misunderstanding. This is a local matter—"
“This is a multi-state municipal corruption and RICO investigation that our office has been building for fourteen months,” Agent Ramos interrupted, her eyes cutting right through him. She turned her attention to Clara, her expression softening just a fraction as she saw the baby carrier. “Mrs. Vance? I’m Agent Ramos. We’ve been looking for the red ledger and the secondary flash drives your husband tried to deliver to our Seattle field office before his death.”
Clara slowly reached into her pocket, pulled out the worn leather red ledger and the remaining data cards, and placed them carefully onto the metal table between them.
“They’re all here,” Clara said softly, a wave of profound exhaustion finally washing over her limbs. “Every single transaction. My husband died trying to expose them, and I’m not letting his memory be dragged through the mud by corrupt politicians.”
Agent Ramos picked up the ledger reverently, nodding to one of the marshals who immediately stepped forward to secure the evidence in a heavy metal transport case. She looked down at Lily, then back up at Clara with deep respect in her eyes.

“You’ve done a brave thing, Mrs. Vance. More than you know,” Agent Ramos said. She turned back toward the District Attorney and Detective Miller. “Marshal, take Mr. Vance into custody for questioning regarding municipal fund embezzlement and witness tampering. And issue an immediate warrant for the arrest of Evelyn Sterling on charges of conspiracy and corporate fraud.”
As the marshals moved in to cuff the stunned District Attorney, Detective Miller let out a long, slow breath and offered Clara a quiet, appreciative nod. But even as the cuffs clicked shut, a cold realization settled into Clara’s mind—Evelyn Sterling was not the kind of woman to go down quietly without striking back from the shadows.
