Chapter 15

The deafening crack of a gunshot echoed across the coastal highway, swallowed instantly by the roaring wind and the relentless crash of the ocean waves far below. But the bullet didn't strike Clara. In a blur of motion, Agent Ramos fired a single, precise round, striking Evelyn’s wrist. The heavy revolver flew from Evelyn’s hand, clattering noisily against the wet asphalt before sliding over the edge of the guardrail into the dark abyss below.

Evelyn screamed in pain, clutching her bleeding wrist as she collapsed to her knees in the mud and rain. Within seconds, federal backup cruisers arrived from both directions, their sirens wailing into the night as agents swarmed the scene, placing handcuffs on the fallen corporate tyrant and reading her rights over the howling wind.

Detective Miller rushed over to the SUV, pulling the rear door open to check on Lily, who was cooing softly inside her carrier, completely unharmed by the terrifying ordeal. Miller looked up at Clara with profound awe in his eyes.

“Are you alright?” he asked, offering a steady hand to help her back inside out of the freezing rain.

Clara took a deep, shuddering breath, feeling the heavy burden of the past few days finally lift completely from her shoulders. The nightmare was over. Mark’s name was restored, the corrupt empire was dismantled, and her daughter was safe. She climbed back into the warm cabin, lifting Lily into her arms and holding her close against her chest.

“I’m more than alright,” Clara whispered, kissing the top of the tiny pink hat. “We’re home.”

As the first pale streaks of dawn began to break over the jagged coastline, piercing through the dispersing storm clouds with a warm, golden light, the police cruiser escorted them away from the edge of the cliff and toward a brand new beginning. Clara looked out the window at the rising sun, knowing that no matter what storms lay ahead in life, she had the strength to weather them all for her daughter.
