Chapter 14

The rain poured relentlessly, turning the coastal highway into a slick, dark mirror reflecting the flashing red lights of their disabled SUV. Clara clutched Lily tightly to her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs as she sat trapped in the back seat. Agent Ramos had already drawn her service weapon, her eyes scanning the dark tree line bordering the rocky drop-off.
“Stay down, Mrs. Vance,” Ramos ordered, pushing the car door open cautiously and stepping out into the storm with her pistol raised.
Before Miller could reach the driver’s side to assist, the headlights of a black sedan cut through the rain from behind, parking diagonally to block their only exit. The driver’s side door opened slowly. Step by calculated step, Evelyn Sterling emerged from the shadows, her dark red blouse soaked through with rain, her short blonde hair plastered against her forehead. She wasn’t wearing a coat, and her expression wasn’t one of panic or defeat—it was the cold, hollow look of a desperate predator backed into a corner with nothing left to lose.
In her right hand, Evelyn held a heavy steel-barreled revolver, the dark metal glinting menacingly beneath the amber glow of the highway warning lights.
“End of the line, Clara,” Evelyn yelled over the roar of the wind and rain, her voice carrying a manic, chilling edge. “You just couldn’t leave well enough alone, could you? You had to dig up graves that were better left buried.”
Agent Ramos leveled her weapon at Evelyn, her stance professional and unflinching. “Drop the weapon, Mrs. Sterling! Drop it right now or you will be fired upon!”
Evelyn didn’t even glance at the federal agent. Her cold blue eyes remained locked entirely on Clara through the shattered rear window of the SUV. A bitter, broken laugh escaped Evelyn’s lips as she raised the heavy revolver higher, pointing it directly toward the back seat where Clara sat shielding the baby.
“If I’m going down for embezzlement, fraud, and murder, Clara, you and that little bastard are coming with me,” Evelyn screamed, her finger tightening around the trigger as she took a slow step forward through the freezing rain.
Clara didn’t scream. She didn’t cower. She unbuckled the baby carrier, sliding it gently onto the floor beneath the front seat to protect Lily from any stray rounds, and then pushed the rear door open, stepping out into the storm to face her tormentor face-to-face.

“It’s over, Evelyn,” Clara said, her voice cutting through the wind with absolute, unyielding power. “Everyone knows the truth. The red ledger is in federal hands.”
Evelyn’s finger trembled on the trigger, her face twisting in pure rage as she prepared to fire the fatal shot.
