Chapter 1

The afternoon sun filtered dust motes across the cramped living room, offering no warmth to the chill settling deep inside Clara’s bones. She stood near the worn fabric of the sofa, her knees trembling beneath a soft pink robe and rumpled white pajamas. In her arms, little Lily shifted restlessly, a bundle of warmth wrapped in a pale blanket topped with a tiny pink hat. The baby let out a faint, shivering whimper that pierced straight through Clara’s exhausted heart.

Across the room, Evelyn advanced another step, her short blonde hair catching the harsh light from the unwashed window. The dark red blouse she wore seemed to pulse with the raw fury radiating from her posture. Evelyn’s finger remained extended, rigid and accusing, pointed straight at Clara’s face as her voice cut through the heavy air with venomous precision.

“What is wrong with you?” Evelyn yelled, her face contorted in absolute disbelief. “You are throwing your entire life away for a screaming infant who won’t even remember this tomorrow! You need a reality check, Clara, and you need it right now!”

Clara swallowed hard, tasting the metallic tang of fear and fatigue. She wiped a stray tear from her cheek with the back of her trembling hand, keeping her grip secure around the baby. The exhaustion of three sleepless nights clawed at her brain, but a primal surge of protective fire eclipsed every weakness. She stared right back into Evelyn’s hostile eyes, refusing to shrink away any longer.

“My daughter comes first!” Clara said, her voice shaking yet carrying a terrifying, unyielding resolve. “Get out of my house!”

Evelyn stopped dead in her tracks, stunned by the sudden defiance. A dark, predatory smirk curled the older woman’s lips as she lowered her pointing finger slowly, her gaze locking onto the pink hat of the sleeping infant.

“Your house?” Evelyn laughed, a harsh, humorless sound that echoed off the bare walls. “You don’t even know who owns this roof over your head, do you?”

Clara froze, the breath catching in her throat as Evelyn reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a heavy manila folder.
