Chapter 14: The Return of the Craftsman
The following autumn, on a crisp morning when the sea mists hung low over the bay, an old passenger bus stopped at the crossroads outside Bristol.
Julian stepped down into the gravel road, carrying a single duffel bag.
He had completed his six-year federal sentence, having served four years as a timber forestry crew foreman in the Massachusetts state parks.
He was forty-one years old now. His hair was trimmed short, streaked with silver at the temples; his frame was lean, muscular, and hardened by years of daily manual labor in the woods. He wore a plain denim work shirt, dark canvas trousers, and sturdy leather boots.
He walked down the gravel driveway of the boatyard, stopping at the timber gate.
Through the open doors of the boat shop, the sound of hand planes and mallets echoed into the clear salt air.
Nathan Cole was in the yard, helping two apprentices true up a forty-foot mast with a traveling hoist.
Nathan saw Julian, wiped sawdust from his hands, and walked slowly to the gate.
Julian stopped three paces away, taking off his canvas cap, his posture humble, quiet, and devoid of all former pretense.
""Mr. Cole,"" Julian said softly, his voice low and steady.
""Hello, Julian,"" Nathan replied, his eyes calm and observant.
Julian looked toward the slipway where *The Deliverance* was tied to the pier, her sails furled, her lines clean and true.
""The state forestry commission assigned me to the coastal watershed restoration crew in Narragansett,"" Julian said, looking down at his scarred hands. ""We start planting native salt marsh cedar on Monday. I only stopped to tell you... the work you've done here honors the earth.""
Nathan extended his large, calloused hand over the gate.
""The soil needs honest hands, Julian,"" Nathan said with quiet, profound respect. ""Work true.""
