Chapter 13: The Harvest of the Sail-Loft

Five years passed.

The Castile Maritime Guild expanded into an internationally celebrated center for sustainable wooden boatbuilding and regional ecological conservation, training over forty young apprentices every year from across the United States and Canada.

Vanessa Montgomery had completed her master shipwright credentials, becoming the lead instructor of hull lofting and timber joinery at the academy.

She had restored her family’s historic stone homestead in Bristol, converting the grounds into an organic community vegetable farm and orchard that provided free produce to local working families.

On a warm Saturday morning in June, the boatyard was alive with the sound of children’s laughter.

Sitting on a pile of fragrant cedar shavings in the main shop was four-year-old Samuel—Clara and Nathan’s son—named in memory of the master boatbuilder who had guided their first steps.

Little Samuel wore tiny denim overalls, holding a smooth wooden sanding block, carefully polishing the rounded edge of a small toy wooden sailboat Nathan had shaped for him.

""Aunt Vanessa! Look!"" Samuel shouted, holding up the toy boat with both hands. ""No wobbles! It’s ready for the water!""

Vanessa knelt down in the cedar shavings, taking the toy with her strong, calloused hands, inspecting the wood with a proud, loving grin.

""That is master-grade joinery, little sailor,"" Vanessa smiled, tapping his nose with a wood shaving. ""Just like your mother builds her ships.""

Clara walked into the shop carrying a basket of fresh red strawberries from Vanessa’s farm, her face glowing with radiant, enduring health. She leaned against the heavy maple workbench, resting her hand over her abdomen where their second child was growing beneath the warm morning sun.

Her soul was completely at peace.
