Chapter 1: The Shattered Tier

The marble floor of the grand manor foyer in Newport, Rhode Island, was covered in a wreckage of sugar, buttercream, and bruised gardenias.
Clara stood three paces past the gilt-framed threshold, her fingers resting lightly on the telescoping handle of her rolling hard-shell suitcase. Her beige trench coat was unbuttoned, draped over a clean cream silk knit and tailored trousers. She did not turn around when the impact echoed through the cavernous foyer—a wet, heavy thud followed by the crystalline crash of a three-tiered brass cake stand striking the limestone.
Behind her, Vanessa lay prostrate across the collapsed dessert table. The pristine French Chantilly lace of her six-thousand-dollar wedding gown was smeared with raspberry compote and ruined frosting; sugar pearls were tangled in her disheveled blonde waves.
""Stop it! Both of you!"" Julian’s voice cracked with frantic, shrill terror.
He stood in the center of the hall, his bespoke black tuxedo askew, his cummerbund twisted, looking between the woman weeping in the confectionery ruins on the floor and the woman walking out the front doors.
Clara paused by the towering double doors of carved mahogany. She turned her head slightly, her dark eyes calm, clear, and steady.
""I didn't come to take him from you, Vanessa,"" Clara said, her voice dropping into a quiet, measured cadence that carried cleanly over the horrified gasps of forty bridesmaids and family guests. ""I only came to deliver the deed to the gatehouse. The property is yours. The debts, however, belong entirely to Julian.""
Julian’s face drained of color until he looked like a statue carved from salt. ""Clara... wait. The municipal bond transfer hasn't cleared the offshore escrow!""
""It never will, Julian,"" Clara replied softly.

She pushed open the heavy brass door, stepped out into the crisp, sea-scented Atlantic breeze, and walked down the wide granite steps without looking back.
