Chapter 9 - The Living Ghost

The name hung in the damp air of the office like a toxic cloud. Jonathan stood casually by the doorway, his hands tucked deep into the pockets of his dark trench coat, watching the color drain from Arthur’s face.

"What did you just say?" Elena demanded, stepping out from behind Arthur, her dark eyes blazing with a mixture of terror and fury. "What did you say about Mia?"

Jonathan turned his gaze toward her, a sympathetic smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Ah, Elena. You poor, manipulated soul. Arthur never told you the truth about your sister, did he? He told you she died in the crash. He gave you a funeral with an empty casket. But Mia wasn't in that car."

"Shut up!" Arthur roared, lunging forward with the heavy paperweight raised.

Jonathan didn't even flinch. With surprising speed, he sidestepped Arthur's charge, tripping him with a swift sweep of his foot. Arthur crashed hard against the mahogany desk, sending the microcassette recorder flying across the room.

"Violence won't rewrite history, Arthur," Jonathan said smoothly, dusting off his lapel as Arthur scrambled to his feet, panting and nursing a bruised shoulder. Jonathan turned his attention back to Elena and Leo. "Mia is alive. And she has been waiting for someone in this room to unlock the rest of that box."

"You're lying," Elena whispered, shaking her head violently as tears streamed down her cheeks. "I saw the wreckage. I saw the police reports. Arthur showed me the death certificate."

"A certificate signed by a judge who owes Arthur's firm a very large favor," Jonathan countered, pulling a folded document from his trench coat pocket and tossing it onto the desk. "Check the watermark, Elena. That's the real coroner's report from three years ago. Cause of death: none. Body recovered: negative."

Elena stared at the document on the desk, her hands trembling as she reached out and unfolded the crisp paper. Her eyes scanned the official seals and signatures. The blood drained entirely from her face, and she stumbled backward, catching herself against the bookshelf.

"It's real," she choked out, looking up at Arthur with a look of utter devastation. "You knew all along. You lied to me every single day for three years."

"I did it to protect you!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with desperation as he stepped toward her. "You don't understand what Jonathan is involved in. If he has Mia, she's a pawn in a game to destroy everything we've built."

"Protect me?" Elena's voice rose, sharp and laced with a profound betrayal. "You didn't protect anyone, Arthur. You buried a secret, and now it's come back to destroy us."

Leo stepped forward, picking up the document from the desk. The boy's face was completely expressionless as he read the words, then looked up at Jonathan with a cold, piercing stare.

"Where is she?" Leo asked, his voice chillingly calm for an eight-year-old.

Jonathan smiled, a dark, conspiratorial grin. "She's right where you left her, Leo. In the basement of the house where it all started."
