Chapter 6 - The Deadbolt Slide

The heavy metallic scrape of the deadbolt sliding into place echoed through the dark office like a final sentence. Arthur rushed to the fire door, throwing his weight against the heavy oak panels. He rattled the brass handle frantically, but it held firm, secured by an industrial lock on the other side.

"Hey! Open this door!" Arthur shouted, slamming his fist against the wood until his knuckles throbbed. "Who's out there? Let us out!"

"Stop wasting your energy, Arthur," Elena said, her voice tight with a rising panic as she stepped away from the desk. "They locked us in. We're trapped. Just like Mia."

"We aren't trapped," Arthur turned back, his face hard in the dim light, though a sheen of sweat betrayed his inner terror. "There has to be another way out. Older buildings like this always have service shafts or maintenance hatches."

"Like the one under the desk?" Leo asked quietly, pointing back toward the open floor hatch where the dark cavity loomed like an open mouth.

Arthur looked from the boy to the open hatch. The air rising from the subterranean space felt colder now, smelling faintly of damp earth and rust. He picked up his smartphone, using its flashlight beam to peer down into the dark recess again. The metal lockbox sat open beside the hole, displaying the bloodstained cassette tape and the mysterious Polaroid.

"We need to listen to that tape," Elena said suddenly, her tone shifting from panic to a grim, resolute determination. She walked over to the desk and picked up the small microcassette recorder that had been tucked beneath the lockbox, unnoticed until now.

"Elena, put that down. We don't know what's on it," Arthur warned, stepping between her and the device.

"We need to know the truth, Arthur!" Elena snapped, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce defiance. "You've been lying to me since the day we met. You told me Mia died in a simple car accident. You told me the case was closed. But this room, this mannequin, this tape... it all proves you're hiding something massive."

"I protected you," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a desperate plea.

"From what?" Elena demanded, stepping closer until she was inches from his chest. "From the truth? Or from yourself?"

Before Arthur could answer, Leo reached out and pressed the play button on the microcassette recorder resting on the mahogany desk. A harsh hiss of static filled the room, followed immediately by the unmistakable sound of a car engine revving violently, tires screeching against wet pavement, and a terrified scream that cut off mid-sound.
