Chapter 11 - The Headlights on the Glass

The harsh glare of twin headlights cut through the frosted glass windows of the office, casting long, dancing shadows across the white walls. The hum of a heavy engine vibrated through the floorboards as a vehicle idling outside blocked the only visible exit.

"They're waiting for us," Elena whispered, clutching her father's cracked pocket watch so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Arthur moved swiftly, positioning himself between Elena and the door. He reached into his grey suit jacket and pulled out his phone, tapping the screen to dial emergency services. The screen flashed a bright red error message: No service.

"They're jamming the signal," Arthur muttered, pocketing the useless device. "We need to find another way out of this building."

"There is no other way out," Leo said calmly, walking toward the open floor hatch. He pointed the flashlight beam down into the dark cavity. "Jonathan locked the exterior doors. But this leads to the maintenance tunnel that connects to the old estate."

Arthur stared at the boy in astonishment. "How could you possibly know that?"

"Because I watched you map it out on your desk the night before we left," Leo replied without hesitation, his young face unreadable in the pale light. "You said it was an emergency escape route. For family only."

Elena looked at Arthur, her expression a mix of betrayal and shock. "You built an escape tunnel beneath our feet and never told me?"

"It was a precaution," Arthur defended himself, his voice tight. "I had enemies, Elena. Powerful men who wanted to tear our lives apart. That tunnel was insurance."

"And now it's our only way out," Elena said, stepping past him without another word and lowering herself cautiously into the dark opening of the hatch.

"Elena, wait!" Arthur reached out, but she was already descending the metal ladder embedded in the concrete wall.

Leo followed without a second glance, his small denim jacket disappearing into the gloom below. Cursing under his breath, Arthur adjusted his suit jacket, grabbed the heavy metal lockbox from the desk, and descended into the damp, cold darkness after them.

The maintenance tunnel smelled of stagnant water and rusted iron. The beam of Leo's flashlight cut through the narrow corridor, illuminating exposed pipes and peeling concrete walls. They moved quickly, their footsteps splashing in the shallow puddles pooling on the floor.

"Keep moving," Arthur urged, shining his own phone light ahead. "The estate is less than a quarter mile down this line."

After ten minutes of hurried walking, the tunnel opened up into a larger, circular chamber. In the center of the room sat an old iron desk covered in dust, and resting squarely on top of it was a single, glowing laptop screen, casting an eerie blue light over the empty space.

Elena stopped dead in her tracks. On the screen, playing in real-time, was a live security feed of their own living room back home, showing a figure in a dark trench coat standing quietly by the fireplace.
