Chapter 7 - The Screeching Tires

The harsh static from the microcassette recorder filled the dark office, but it was the audio that followed which froze them in their tracks. The sound of tires screeching against wet asphalt was deafening, followed by the crunch of metal colliding with a concrete barrier. Then came Mia’s voice, clear and agonizingly real, screaming out in terror before abruptly cutting off into a hollow, echoing silence.

Arthur closed his eyes, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides. The audio file wasn't just a recording; it was the exact reconstruction of the final moments from three years ago, captured on a device he thought had been destroyed in the river alongside the wreckage.

"That... that's my voice," Elena whispered, her face draining of all color as she stared at the recorder. She took a staggering step backward, her dark eyes wide with horror. "Arthur... that's me screaming on the tape. But I wasn't in the car with her. You told me I was at home, recovering from the flu."

"You weren't in the car, Elena," Arthur said, his voice strained as he reached out a placating hand. "That audio... someone manipulated it. They spliced your voice from old phone calls to trick you."

"Don't lie to me anymore!" Elena shouted, her voice breaking as tears finally spilled over her lashes. She slapped his hand away. "I know my own voice! I know the sound of my own terror! Why are you lying? Were you there? Did you do this to her?"

"I tried to save her!" Arthur roared back, the repressed anger and guilt of three years finally bursting through his polished exterior. He grabbed the edges of the desk, leaning in close. "I pulled her out of the burning wreckage, Elena! But someone else was there in the dark. Someone who watched us, someone who set this entire trap for us tonight!"

Leo stood silently beside them, his small frame illuminated by the pale light of the smartphone screen. The boy reached down and picked up the bloodstained cassette tape from the open lockbox. He turned it over in his hands, examining a small red sticker affixed to the plastic shell.

"This isn't a police evidence tape," Leo said quietly, his voice cutting through their argument like glass. He looked up at Arthur with a terrifying maturity. "This is a surveillance recording from the security system inside our old house. The house we lived in before the accident."

Arthur’s breath caught in his throat. He stared at the boy, the blood draining from his face. "How do you know about that system, Leo? You were only five years old when we lived there."

"I remember everything," Leo said, his eyes locking onto Arthur’s with an unblinking intensity. "I remember the man who stood in the hallway while you and Mom were fighting. I remember the sound of the shovel hitting the dirt in the backyard."

Elena gasped, spinning to face Leo. "What did you say?"

Before Leo could answer, the entire building shuddered violently. A low, grinding groan of stressed steel echoed from above them, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps running across the ceiling panels directly overhead.
