Chapter 7: Strategy in the Quiet Hours

The digital clock on the bedside table glowed 2:14 AM. The penthouse was silent, save for the faint hum of the city far below. Evelyn lay awake, staring at the ceiling as moonlight filtered through the sheer curtains. Beside her, Damon was awake too, his breathing slow and even, his mind actively working through the logistics of their counter-offensive.

Evelyn turned on her side, resting her head on her hand. ""You aren't sleeping.""

""Neither are you,"" Damon replied softly, his voice gravelly in the dark. He turned to face her, his hazel eyes catching the pale light. ""I’ve been reviewing the corporate bylaws and our forensic accountant’s midnight brief. Kieran made a tactical error when he had Mrs. Shaw threatened.""

""Coercing an employee is a separate criminal offense,"" Evelyn murmured.

""Exactly. It moves this out of the realm of a civil corporate dispute and into criminal extortion,"" Damon explained, his hand reaching out to trace the line of her shoulder over the dark brown satin shirt. ""If we move now, we can trap him before his forty-eight-hour deadline expires.""

""And what about my past? What about the original seed money from six years ago?"" Evelyn asked, her voice carrying a fragile vulnerability she rarely showed the world. ""Even if Kieran goes down for extortion, the media will feast on the narrative that I built my empire on stolen capital.""

Damon paused, his expression softening completely. He pulled her closer, resting his forehead against hers. ""Listen to me, Evelyn. Six years ago, you were young, brilliant, and manipulated by a man who treated people like chess pieces. You didn't steal anything. You survived an abusive corporate mentor who used your accounts as a blind drop. Our forensic team verified every wire transfer from that period. The money originated from accounts Kieran controlled personally, not stolen foundation assets. He structured it to look like your liability so he could control you forever.""

Evelyn felt a tear slip down her cheek—not of sorrow, but of profound, long-overdue release. The heavy anchor she had dragged behind her for years suddenly unclipped.

""You knew,"" Evelyn whispered. ""You knew before we even got married.""

""I knew you were the strongest, most authentic person I had ever met,"" Damon corrected gently, wiping the tear away with his thumb. ""And I knew I would spend the rest of my life making sure no one ever held your past over your head again.""
