Chapter 4: Threshold of Truth

The sun dipped below the Manhattan skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across the hardwood floors of Evelyn and Damon’s penthouse apartment. Evelyn stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a dark brown satin button-down shirt that replaced the navy blue dress from earlier in the day. The scratch on her arm had been cleaned and covered with a small, flesh-toned bandage. She watched the distant flow of tail lights, her mind replaying Kieran’s parting words.
Damon entered the room carrying two glasses of amber whiskey, offering one to Evelyn. She took it, her fingers brushing his.
""You don't have to carry it all alone,"" Damon said quietly, taking a small sip. He stood close, his tall frame a familiar anchor in the sprawling, quiet apartment.
""It’s not about carrying it alone, Damon. It’s about protecting what we've built,"" Evelyn murmured, staring into her glass. ""Kieran isn't just an ex-business partner with a grudge. He represents the era of my life I spent trying to forget. When I was desperate, when I had nothing, I signed agreements I didn't fully understand. That one hundred seventy-eight thousand dollars from the boutique today... it was a test. He's tracking every transaction, testing our liquidity.""
Damon set his glass down on the minimalist coffee table. He reached out, gently turning Evelyn to face him. His hazel eyes searched hers with profound patience. ""Let him test us. We have the forensic accountants auditing his holding firms as we speak. His leverage depends on silence, Evelyn. The moment we bring it into the light, his power evaporates.""
""It’s not that simple,"" Evelyn sighed, her gaze dropping to the floor. ""The funding for my first company didn't just come from an investor. It came from an account tied to a research foundation Kieran managed—a foundation that was quietly investigated for asset diversion right before I walked away.""
Damon’s expression flickered with surprise, though his calm demeanor held firm. He processed the gravity of her confession without judgment. ""Are you saying you were an unwitting conduit?""
May you like
""I didn't know at the time,"" Evelyn whispered. ""Or at least, I convinced myself I didn't want to know. If Kieran goes down, his lawyers will try to drag me in alongside him to mitigate his sentence.""
The apartment door chimed softly, breaking their conversation. It was Claire, arriving unexpectedly with a quiet, troubled expression.
