Chapter 2: Shadows Across the Marble

The heavy oak doors of the private consultation room closed softly, cutting off the ambient noise of the bridal boutique. Inside, the air smelled faintly of eucalyptus and expensive parchment. Evelyn sat in a high-backed velvet chair, holding a white ceramic cup of steaming tea. The warmth seeped into her fingers, distracting her from the faint throb of the scratch on her arm. Damon remained standing near the window, gazing out onto the bustling Manhattan street below. His beige suit jacket was unbuttoned, revealing the crisp lines of his vest and tie.

""That child was too deliberate,"" Damon said quietly, breaking the silence. His voice was a low rumble, devoid of paranoia but heavy with analytical observation.

Evelyn took a slow sip of her tea. Her expressive hazel eyes flicked toward the mahogany desk where Mrs. Shaw had laid out the documentation.

""It was an accident, Damon. She’s five years old,"" Evelyn replied, her tone even. Yet, beneath her calm exterior, her mind raced. The collision had felt clumsy, yet the timing of Kieran Mercer’s arrival immediately afterward felt orchestrated.

The door clicked open, and Kieran Mercer stepped into the room without knocking. He moved with the quiet assurance of a man who owned the real estate beneath their feet. Kieran’s black three-piece suit absorbed the soft lamplight, and his sharp jawline seemed carved from granite. He ignored Damon entirely, focusing his dark wavy hair and intense gaze solely on Evelyn.

""Accidents are expensive in this neighborhood, Evelyn,"" Kieran said, his voice smooth and measured. He walked over to the desk, his fingers brushing against the edge of the one hundred seventy-eight thousand dollar receipt that Mrs. Shaw had left behind.

""What do you want, Kieran?"" Evelyn asked, setting her teacup down with deliberate care. She refused to shrink beneath his gaze, maintaining the elegant posture that had defined her public life for years.

May you like

Kieran offered a faint, humorless smile. ""I want what was promised before the ink dried on your marriage certificate. You cannot outrun a debt by changing your surname, Evelyn. And you certainly cannot hide behind a man who wears beige suits to financial negotiations.""

Damon turned from the window, his expression hardening. He did not raise his voice, but the sudden stillness in his tall frame signaled a dangerous shift in the room's dynamic.
