Chapter 4

The following morning broke with a heavy, grey fog that clung to the windows of the Vance manor, obscuring the gardens and giving the sprawling estate an eerie, isolated feel. Inside the grand kitchen, Martha was quietly preparing breakfast while Lily sat at the heavy oak table, staring listlessly at a bowl of oatmeal. The door swung open silently, and Marcus stepped into the room. He wore his usual dark suit, but his jacket was unbuttoned, and the harsh authority he typically projected was noticeably absent.

Martha stiffened instantly, dropping a silver spoon into the sink with a sharp clatter. "Mr. Marcus. We weren't expecting security in the domestic wing at this hour."

"Relax, Martha," Marcus said quietly, his voice pitched low so as not to carry up the main staircase. He walked past the cook and stopped beside Lily’s chair. The young girl immediately shrank back, her eyes wide with lingering fear from the previous day's trauma. Marcus noticed her defensive posture, and a flicker of genuine remorse crossed his rugged features. He reached slowly into his suit pocket, ensuring his movements were deliberate and non-threatening.

He placed the colorful small ball gently on the wooden table beside Lily’s bowl.

Lily gasped softly, staring down at the toy in disbelief. She looked up at Marcus, searching his stern, chiseled face for a trap. "Mr. Julian said I couldn't have it anymore. He said it stays outside."

"Mr. Vance is currently occupied with a conference call in his study," Marcus said evenly, his eyes meeting hers with a steady, reassuring gravity. "And sometimes, things left outside get lost in the elements. It would be a shame for such a bright toy to be ruined by the morning dew."

Lily reached out her injured hand, wincing slightly as her bruised fingers brushed against the rubber surface of the ball. She clutched it tightly to her chest, a small, hesitant smile finally breaking through her guarded expression. "Thank you, Mr. Marcus."

"Don't thank me, Lily," Marcus murmured, resting a heavy, calloused hand briefly on the back of her chair before standing upright. "Just... be careful where you play. There are many sharp corners in this house, and not everyone is as willing to pick up what you drop."

Martha watched the interaction with a mixture of shock and profound relief. She wiped her hands on her apron, stepping closer to Marcus. "You're taking a significant risk by defying him, Marcus. If Julian finds out you returned that to her, he won't hesitate to turn his wrath on you as well."

"Julian is blinded by his own paranoia," Marcus replied, his tone hardening slightly as he shifted his gaze to the cook. "He believes everyone is conspiring against his legacy. But he's missing the bigger picture. Someone has been moving files from his private office. Documents related to the original deed of this property, and papers concerning Lily's mother's estate."

Martha went pale, gripping the edge of the counter. "The original deed? But Mr. Vance claimed he bought this estate outright years ago."

"He acquired it through a forced buyout," Marcus corrected quietly. "And if Lily is the legal heir to the underlying trust, Julian's entire financial empire rests on a very fragile foundation of fraud. That is why he is so desperate to control her. It’s not just discipline; it’s preservation."
