Chapter 12

The following morning, the grey fog that had choked the Vance estate for days burned away under a brilliant, unclouded autumn sun. The grand stone patio—where Lily had suffered such cruelty just days prior—was now bathed in warm, golden light. Movers and federal investigators quietly packed equipment into unmarked vans parked along the circular drive, wrapping up the initial phase of the estate's seizure and transition into receivership.
Lily sat on the stone balustrade, wearing a clean, bright yellow dress that Martha had found tucked away in the back of the household storage closets. Her pigtails were neatly tied with cheerful blue ribbons, and the bruises on her hand were healing beneath a clean white bandage applied by the medical personnel who had processed the estate the night before.
Marcus walked out onto the terrace, holding two paper cups of hot tea. He wore a crisp white button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking less like an intimidating corporate enforcer and more like a weary protector finally putting down his heavy shield. He offered one of the cups to Martha, who was sitting nearby on a wrought-iron bench, before walking over to stand beside Lily.
"How is the hand feeling today?" Marcus asked gently, his deep voice carrying a natural warmth that had been hidden beneath layers of professional detachment for years.
Lily looked up at him, offering a small, genuine smile. "It aches a little when I grip things, but the doctor said it will be completely fine soon."
Marcus nodded, pulling the colorful small ball from his pocket and holding it out to her on his open palm. "I think this belongs to you permanently now. No one will ever take it away again."
Lily took the ball, clutching it to her chest with both hands, careful of her healing fingers. "Thank you, Mr. Marcus. For everything. What happens to us now?"
"The courts are currently sorting through your mother's original trust," Marcus explained, leaning against the stone railing beside her. "Your uncle Jonathan—the one Julian claimed was dead—has been located living overseas under a protective medical leave. Federal authorities are flying him back as we speak. Once he arrives, he will be appointed as your legal guardian and the rightful trustee of the estate."

Martha walked over, joining them with a hopeful expression. "An uncle? Lily has family left? Real family?"
"Real family," Marcus confirmed with a reassuring nod. "And until he arrives, I’ve been appointed by the federal receivership to oversee security and ensure that the transition goes smoothly. You won't have to worry about locked doors or angry voices ever again."
