Chapter 1

The stone patio of the estate was cold beneath little Lily’s bare knees, but the physical chill was nothing compared to the crushing agony radiating from her small hand. Her fingers were pinned mercilessly beneath the gleaming black leather shoe of Julian Vance. Above her, Julian’s face was a mask of cold, unyielding fury, his dark blue polo shirt pristine and entirely unaffected by the cruelty of his actions. He looked down at her with eyes devoid of any paternal warmth, his jaw tight as he delivered the words that would forever fracture her childhood.

"Maybe pain will finally teach you to listen," Julian said, his voice a low, terrifying hum that cut through the crisp afternoon air.

Just a few feet away stood Marcus, the muscular man in the sharply tailored dark suit, who served as Julian’s primary enforcer and silent shadow. Marcus did not flinch, nor did he offer a gesture of comfort. His expression remained neutral, carved from stone, though a faint twitch in his jaw betrayed a sliver of internal hesitation. He shifted his weight, his broad shoulders tensing inside his custom jacket as he looked from Julian’s polished shoe down to the vibrant, colorful small ball resting just beyond Lily’s trapped fingers. That little toy—a bright mosaic of rubber and paint—was the catalyst for this disaster, the simple object that Lily had dared to chase across the forbidden boundary of the western terrace.

Lily bit her lower lip so hard it threatened to bleed, holding back a full-throated scream not out of bravery, but because she had learned long ago that crying out only prolonged the torment. Her neat brown pigtails, usually tied with cheerful ribbons by the kind housekeeper who had vanished last month, were now dusty and askew against the collar of her simple beige dress. Tears tracked hot paths through the dirt smudged across her cheeks, but she made no sound beyond a ragged, shuddering intake of breath.

Julian slowly lifted his foot, releasing the immense pressure on her bruised flesh. Lily immediately pulled her trembling hand back against her chest, cradling it in her lap as she gasped for air. Her fingers were swollen and mottled, a stark contrast to the immaculate surroundings of the wealthy household. Julian did not offer a hand to help her up. Instead, he crouched down slightly, meeting her tear-filled eyes with a chilling intensity that demanded absolute submission.

"That ball stays here," Julian commanded, gesturing sharply toward the colorful toy on the stones. "And you go inside. Now."
