Chapter 2

Lily scrambled backward across the rough stone, her scraped knees stinging with every movement, before turning and fleeing into the cavernous shadows of the manor. The heavy oak doors muffled the fading sound of her sobs as she retreated down the long, dimly lit corridors. The interior of the Vance estate was always immaculate, smelling faintly of expensive beeswax, antique wood, and old money. Yet, tonight, the grand hallways felt less like a home and more like a mausoleum holding secrets too heavy for a seven-year-old mind to fully comprehend.
As she hurried toward the back staircase that led to the servants' quarters where she and her silent caretakers were relegated, a soft hand suddenly reached out from an alcove, pulling her gently into the shadows. Lily gasped, her heart leaping into her throat, but relaxed instantly when she recognized Martha, the elderly cook whose kind eyes were always filled with a sorrow she dared not voice aloud. Martha pressed a damp cloth gently against Lily’s bruised hand, wincing as she saw the angry red impressions left by Julian’s shoe.
"Oh, my poor little bird," Martha whispered, her voice trembling as she checked the extent of the damage. "You must learn to be invisible around him, Lily. You know how angry he gets when anything disrupts his precious routine."
"I only wanted my ball," Lily whispered back, her voice breaking on a dry sob. "It rolled past the line. It was just a game."
"Nothing here is ever just a game," Martha warned, glancing nervously down the hall to ensure Marcus or Julian were not approaching. She pulled a small tube of herbal salve from her apron pocket and smoothed it over Lily’s fingers with practiced, soothing care. "Your father—Mr. Vance—he carries burdens that make him cruel. But remember, Lily, you are stronger than he thinks. Your mother was strong, too. Never forget that."
It was the first time in months that Martha had mentioned Lily’s mother, a woman whose face had slowly faded from photographs throughout the house, as if someone was systematically erasing her existence. Lily gripped Martha’s worn apron strings, desperate for answers. "Where is she, Martha? Why won't anyone tell me the truth?"

"Hush now," Martha pleaded, pressing a finger to her own lips. "Walls have ears in this house. Mr. Vance pays Marcus a fortune to watch everything and everyone. If he hears us talking about the past, he will send me away just like the others, and then you will truly be alone."
Lily nodded slowly, swallowing her questions, though a fierce spark of defiance ignited deep within her chest. She looked down at her treated hand, the pain dulling to a persistent ache. She was small, and she was trapped in a gilded cage, but she was no longer willing to simply obey without a fight.
