Chapter 10

The air in the subterranean vault grew stifling, charged with an invisible, high-stakes tension. Julian took two deliberate steps into the chamber, his shiny black shoes clicking against the flagstone floor—the exact same shoes that had pinned Lily’s hand just days ago. Lily instinctively retreated a step, pressing her back against the wooden table where her mother’s portrait rested.

Marcus did not yield an inch. His muscular frame tensed inside his dark suit, ready for physical confrontation if necessary, though he knew violence in this enclosed space would play directly into Julian’s hands.

"You can threaten me, Julian, and you can lock doors, but you cannot stop the legal machinery that has already been set in motion," Marcus said, his voice entirely devoid of fear. "Your brother Jonathan didn't die abroad, did he? You forced him out of the company, falsified his death certificates, and seized his assets to fund this very estate."

Julian’s smile vanished, replaced by a dark, dangerous glare. "Jonathan was weak. He cared about people, about ethics, about family loyalty—all the worthless sentiments that destroy true power. He deserved what he got, and Elena was foolish enough to follow the exact same path. She thought she could outsmart me with a hidden key and a sentimental toy."

Julian’s eyes darted toward Lily, locking onto the colorful small ball clutched tightly in her trembling hands.

"Give me that ball, Lily," Julian demanded, extending a hand palm-upward. "It holds no value for you. It is merely trash."

"It's not trash!" Lily cried out, her voice cracking with a sudden surge of courage that surprised even herself. She gripped the colorful rubber toy tighter against her chest. "It was my mother's! And you're a bad man!"

Julian’s face flushed dark with fury, the thin veneer of corporate civility shattering completely. He lunged forward faster than Marcus anticipated, aiming to snatch the toy from the child's hands. But Marcus moved with lightning speed, intercepting Julian mid-stride. He caught Julian by the shoulders, driving him backward against the damp stone wall with a dull thud that echoed through the vault.

"Enough, Julian," Marcus commanded, his voice a low, thunderous growl. "It ends tonight."

Before Julian could retaliate, a sharp sound echoed from the corridor outside the vault—the distinct, heavy thud of multiple boots marching down the stone steps, followed by the authoritative flash of bright white emergency lights spilling into the subterranean hallway.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!" a voice boomed from the darkness.

Julian froze against the wall, his eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated panic as the grim reality of his downfall finally crashed down upon him.
