Over the next six months, the grand estate underwent a transformation. The heavy velvet drapes and oppressive antique furniture were replaced with bright, warm tones. Light filled the hallways where terror had once lingered.
Julian and Elena worked together to settle her late father’s estate. Rather than liquidating his assets in shame, they established a non-profit foundation dedicated to continuing his medical research. Julian used his financial acumen to restructure the debts, paying off every creditor transparently.
The public narrative shifted completely. The rumors of scandal evaporated, replaced by admiration for the couple's integrity and philanthropy.
Yet, Julian knew that financial restitution was only half the journey. The real work lay in healing the emotional fractures within his family.
Once a month, Julian traveled up to the Vermont estate. The house was modest, surrounded by rolling hills and pine forests. Victoria lived there in near solitude, attended only by a local housekeeper.
When Julian visited, he observed a startling change. The sharp, tailored suits were gone, replaced by simple knit sweaters. Victoria spent her days gardening, her hands—once obsessed with perfect manicures—now caked with rich black soil.
They spoke sparingly at first, mostly about the weather or the estate's garden. But slowly, painful truths began to surface during their long walks through the autumn woods.
