Chapter 2: Echoes in the Marble

The silence that followed was louder than any shouting match. Maria, the maid, stepped back against the wall, her hands trembling violently. ""Mr. Julian,"" she breathed, her eyes darting between Victoria and the floor. ""I was only told to help keep her calm... I didn't know...""

""Go to your quarters, Maria,"" Julian said softly without looking at her. ""Now.""

Maria didn't hesitate. Her footsteps hurried away, leaving the three of them isolated in the vast, echoing foyer.

Victoria stood her ground, though her chest heaved beneath her sharp black blazer. She smoothed her jacket with stiff fingers, attempting to reclaim her posture. ""Julian, you are reacting emotionally to a complex situation. Elena has been unstable for months. Her family's debt, her father's illness—it has pushed her over the edge. I was protecting our family from public scandal.""

""By drugging her?"" Julian stood up slowly. He towered over his mother, but his shoulders were heavy with a burden he had refused to acknowledge for years. ""By forcing her to sign away her dignity while she could barely breathe?""

""It was for the family legacy!"" Victoria’s voice cracked, revealing the frantic panic beneath her composure. ""Do you have any idea what her father's estate owes to the bank? Do you know what happens to the Sterling name if we are tied to their bankruptcy? I took measures to secure our standing!""

""There is no Sterling name without honor,"" Julian replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. He picked up the glass with the residual powder and wrapped it carefully inside a clean linen handkerchief from his pocket. ""You crossed a line today, Mother. A line from which there is no returning.""

Elena pulled herself up using the marble console table for support. She looked at Victoria, not with anger, but with a deep, haunting pity. ""You were afraid of me,"" Elena whispered. ""All this time, you weren't trying to protect Julian. You were afraid I would show him who you really are.""

Victoria’s eyes widened, a sudden flash of vulnerability breaking through her defensive posture before she clamped her jaw shut, refusing to answer.
