Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

By nightfall, the estate felt like a mausoleum. Julian had moved Elena to a private wing of the grand estate, locking the doors and assigning personal security that answered only to him. He spent the evening kneeling beside her bed, holding her cold hand as a private physician examined her and took blood samples to identify the sedative Victoria had tried to administer.

""She gave me small doses for weeks,"" Elena murmured, staring up at the intricate crown molding of the ceiling. ""In my tea. In my soup. Whenever you were away in London or New York. I thought I was losing my mind, Julian. I thought the grief over my father was making me hallucinate.""

Julian pressed his forehead against her knuckles, his eyes burning with unshed tears. ""I failed you,"" he admitted, the raw truth tearing at his throat. ""I saw you growing quiet, growing distant, and I believed my mother when she told me you needed rest. I trusted her because she was my mother.""

""We trust the people who build our world,"" Elena said gently, her thumbs tracing the rough knuckles of his hand. ""Until we realize they built it like a cage.""

Meanwhile, in the library downstairs, Victoria sat in the dark. The only illumination came from the embers in the fireplace, casting long, monstrous shadows across the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. She held a crystal glass of whiskey, though she had not taken a sip.

Her phone buzzed repeatedly on the mahogany desk—calls from board members, high-society acquaintances, and legal advisors. She ignored them all. On the desk lay an old silver-framed photograph: Victoria as a young woman, standing beside a stern, unforgiving man in a military uniform—her own father.

She stared at the image with cold, dry eyes. ""You taught me never to let them see weakness,"" she whispered to the empty room. ""You taught me that love is a liability.""

The door to the library opened. Julian stood in the frame, backlit by the hallway lights. He didn't step inside.
