It was an overcast morning in late May when a slick black town car pulled into the driveway of the main estate.
Victoria stepped out onto the gravel driveway. She looked at the grand mansion that had been her fortress and her prison for thirty years. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her step was no longer rigid; it was humble.
Elena stood on the front porch. She wore a simple pastel dress, her dark hair tied back in a ribbon. She looked healthy, radiant, and entirely free of the shadow that had once consumed her.
The two women stared at each other across the manicured courtyard—a distance measured not in yards, but in months of quiet reflection.
Victoria walked slowly up the stone steps. When she reached the porch, she stopped, keeping a respectful distance. She held a small burlap bag containing a healthy green cutting of a rare heirloom rose.
