Chapter 6 - The Chemical Fog

The sweet, sickly scent of the gas filled the confined space of the study within seconds, clinging to the back of the throat like heavy syrup. Leo coughed harshly, his broad shoulders tensing as he threw his full body weight against the heavy mahogany doors once again, but the reinforced smart-locks held firm against the assault. The brass handle remained stubbornly dead in his grip, vibrating slightly as an internal electronic motor engaged a titanium deadbolt within the frame.
"Hold your breath! Put your faces against your shirts!" Leo ordered urgently, tearing the hem of his black cotton shirt and wrapping a makeshift barrier around Lily's nose and mouth before scooping the terrified girl into his arms.
Sarah stumbled backward against the mahogany desk, her knees buckling slightly as the rapid inhalation of the gas began to cloud her cognitive functions. She pulled Toby’s flannel blanket tighter over the baby's face, her own eyelids growing heavy and sluggish as she fought against the overwhelming wave of dizziness washing over her brain.
"Leo... the ventilation... it's tied directly to the main HVAC system," Sarah mumbled, her words slurring together as she slid down the side of the wooden desk until she was sitting flat on the hardwood floor. "They didn't just lock the doors... they flooded the entire east wing."
Leo gritted his teeth, his vision beginning to edge with dark, blurred static at the periphery. He refused to succumb. Adrenaline surged through his veins, temporarily overriding the chemical sedative entering his bloodstream. He scanned the room frantically, his eyes locking onto the massive, floor-to-ceiling antique stained-glass window that overlooked the rear gardens.
"Lily, hold onto my neck as tight as you can! Don't let go!" Leo shouted over the roaring sound in his ears.
With a ferocious burst of strength, Leo charged across the study, tucking his head and shoulder down, and hurled his muscular frame directly through the center of the fragile, multi-colored glass panes. A brilliant cascade of crimson, blue, and gold shards exploded outward into the crisp afternoon air, raining down onto the soft lawn below as father and daughter tumbled out of the second-story window in a chaotic tangle of limbs.
They hit the manicured grass hard, rolling twice before coming to a stop near a decorative stone fountain. Leo gasped greedily for the fresh, unpolluted air of the courtyard, his lungs burning as he instantly checked Lily over. Aside from a few shallow surface scratches on her arms, she was breathing normally, her wide, terrified eyes staring up at him in sheer disbelief.
"Daddy! Mommy is still inside! We left Mommy and Toby!" Lily shrieked, struggling to her feet and pointing frantically back toward the shattered second-story window.
Leo looked up. Wisps of faint, white vapor were curling out of the broken stained-glass opening, dissolving harmlessly into the breeze. Inside the dark, sealed room behind the glass, Sarah’s limp hand could be seen dangling helplessly over the edge of the mahogany desk, her fingers just brushing the wooden floorboards as total unconsciousness claimed her.
Before Leo could even take a step back toward the house, a sharp, mechanical click echoed from the base of the stone fountain. The decorative water spouts hissed and instantly died, replaced by a harsh, metallic voice that boomed outward from an integrated intercom speaker hidden within the stone basin.

“IMPRESSIVE EXIT, MR. VANCE,” a distorted, synthetic voice echoed across the quiet courtyard. “BUT YOU LEFT THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF LEVERAGE BEHIND. IF YOU WANT YOUR WIFE AND SON TO WAKE UP, YOU WILL BRING THE VANGUARD DRIVE TO THE OLD BOATHOUSE BY SUNSET. ALONE.”
